I am looking at buying a set of Ford OEM telescoping trailer mirrors to replace the stock mirrors on my XLT.
In looking at the fordaccessories.com website and talking with my local dealer, it isn't completely clear to either of us whether these mirrors fold both forward and rearward (i.e. breakaway in both directions).
The web photo only shows the front (mirrored side) and shows that they fold towards the rear of the truck but my concern is that these new telescoping mirrors appear to be about 3inches wider than the stock mirrors and I only have about 4-5 inches to spare on clearance entering my garage. If they don't break away when backing out and I mess up, the mirror will go "snap"!...
Just wondering if anyone has purchased a set of OEM replacements from Ford and if they swing both ways!
BTW...my mirrors are heated and power. No turn signals.

The telescopic mirrors only fold backwards towards the back of the truck.
I bought mine on ebay, brand new still wrapped in plastic, still in the sealed box for $150, 100% ford oem (with ford numbers on them). Heated and powered but no turn signal.
Mine is a 2000 limited. The mirrors I got were specific for 99 thru 2002. I just assumed they hadn't changed since very little else has on the X since day one.
i also bought the tow mirrors for my 01 X limited 4x4. the original mirrors had power, heat and signals in them. the tow mirrors are power and heated. brand new in the box from the dealer, as part of the sale of the truck. they DO break in BOTH directions.
My OEM replacement moose-ear mirrors ... telescoping, heated, power, running & turn signal lights ... rotate both aft and forward. It's possible the earlier model years (prior to the models with running lights) only rotate aft.
BTW, when you buy the mirrors, you must purchase two parts for each side ... the mirror and its mounting base, and the front cover (with or without lights).
cficare,
I called my parts guy and he didn't mention two parts per side...do i need to specifically ask that question? He had one for my 2005 in stock and verified that they did indeed break away front and aft but he didn't indicate any additional parts were needed.
I did see some on Ebay and only one seller indicated he had OEM's yet he indicated they only broke away towards the rear of the truck. Perhaps an older model?
Anyway my dealer came down on the price and indicated out hte door for both sides (i'll have to ask about the cover part) with tax included was $315 for heat and power (no turn sigs...man that option adds BUCKS!!! like $250 PER SIDE TOTAL or $500 for both sides plus tax out door!!!). The ones on Ebay that claimed they were OEM but only rotate one way start bidding at $225 plus ~$35 shipping and he couldn't tell me if the connectors were a direct connect on my X or I had to splice from my old mirrors.
Thanks for the responses and I will check with him on the extra part.
BTW I measured my buddies telescoping ones on his F250 PSD and the total extra width for the mirrors appear to be 3" TOTAL or about 1.5 inches per side. I found it interesting that the drivers mirror actually extends about 1.5 inches further out then the passengers to begin with!
I also printed out the steps from this site to remove the door panel...seems pretty straight forward. since I pull a 27' travel trailer these should do the trick. I was concerned that the ones on Ebay that claimed they were OEM's and didn't break away both directions were an accident waiting to happen since i only have ~4-5 inches to spare to begin with...one moment of inattention backing out of the garage and SNAP!...a $150 mistake! Yet if they have the break away feature they shouldn't snap but hopefully fold and give. Considering i'm creeping out of the door anyway...
Thanks again i'll let you know how it works out.

x-hemi-guy, the mirrors on ebay may say oem, and they might be, but, OEM does not always mean GENUINE FORD PARTS. again, the mirrors ARE break away in both directions. the dealer cost is about $235 for BOTH mirrors. they come as a complete assembly. the only question that the dealer will have is "do you want power, heated, and signals? or just power heated? or manual no heat, no signals?" since mine is an 01, i just got the power heated. it was a direct plug in and only 2 part #'s were ordered. however, i did loose the turn signals because the tow mirrors did not have signals until 04 i think. and the tow mirrors for the new trucks were available with or without signal/running light depending if you got the power mirrors. if you got manual mirrors, you did not get the signals/running lights.
this is winding up to be a big deal with these mirrors. if you want cheapo mirrors, go aftermarket. if you want the real deal, go to the dealer and if he knows what he is doing, he will tell you what you can get.
edit, i just saw your profile. you have an 05. if it anything more than a base model, and you already have the power mirrors you can get the mirrors with the signals/running lights. direct plug in/no modification. but, those mirrors will be more expensive than the price i said above. the ones i ordered came with a pigtail that split the harness into two. i didn't need it, mine were direct plugin. AGAIN, GO TO THE DEALER.........

What dealership did you use? I called my dealer and the power heated telescoping ones cost for one near what you said you paid for BOTH. I also checked fordaccessories.com and they want $380 for power heated RH and LH sides. So either the price has gone up since you bought or we are talking about something different.
Just curious as I have yet to find anything near your cost number for a power heated mirror for my Ex. I do not need the signals and the costs he is quoting for those kind of make my decision easier for me...since he is quoting about $500 total for BOTH mirrors with power, heated and signals.
Again I am just curious as i know different dealers sell at different prices. For this difference paying shipping is well worth it. If you can send me your dealership name and number I would greatly appreciate it.
I'd avoid ebay and the aftermarket knock-off stuff.
OEM "should" stand for "Original Equipment from Manufacturer", and be a genuine Ford part. The problem is, some of the ebay vendors say things like "as good as oem", or "oem style", and it get confusing.
I agree that I will only buy ford genuine parts. The part I am confused about from racerx is his price for heated power ones are $85 lower than I can get them for so I wanted to call his Ford dealer directly.
I got my Ford power/heated/turn-signal/running-light moose-ear mirrors for $400/pair from a Ford dealer selling them on ebay. Granted, that was about 18 months ago. In any case, you need to inspect them closely before installing ... preferably before you leave the parts counter. The mirrors are made in Australia, and the top-most plastic point (of the base that attaches to the door frame) is often broken off during transit. Maybe the price increase was due to hundreds of those mirrors being returned as damaged.
x hemi guy, yeah, the reason that i said that price is because that is what i paid for them. which is again, dealer cost. not to be confused with list price. sorry for the confusion. you are probably close to the price with the quote from your dealer. if you know someone who works at a dealer try and have them get them for you. OR,BE SNEAKY. CALL THE DEALER AND SAY "HI, THIS IS (your name) FROM (another dealership in your area, not ford) AND I NEED TO KNOW PRICE AND AVAILABILITY ON A SET OF MIRRORS (whatever mirrors you want), WHATS MY COST ON THEM????" if you like the price, tell them you want to order them and you will pick them up when they come in. give them your easiest number to get hold of you. tell them its for your personal truck, not the dealers. believe it or not, 99.9999% of the time, he will give you that dealers discount. it works and you wouldn't believe the mark-up on the parts. any more questions, holler back. hope it works..
