I was thinking of upgrading my intake and exhaust to a 4 in exhaust and the rapid flow intake do you think its worth the price and can i do it myself again?
Do a search for the Kwik Filter Mod ($21)its simple, cheap and very effective.Blackclouddiesel.com has 4'MBRP exhaust systems (+-$400)that are a great fit and easy to install. Remember you will want to get stainless if you live where they put salt on the roads.
If you want a nice packaged kit, try the link below. My son put one on a 2001 Excursion 7.3L PSD 2wd for about $141 including shipping. Comes with filter (B085011), 4" intake pipe elbow (432-445PE), silicone hose (TFCA-N40-R6), 3 clamps (CT-450) and a mounting band (M002119). The parts can be ordered separately also.
If you do a filter this big (Kwik's 6637 filter is the same size), then you will need to get a replacement battery tray to make room for it. Trust me. The filter is huge and if you cut up the original air filter box to make room for it, there still won't be enough room. Too tight a fit. The replacement battery tray makes for a much nicer fit. My son added the replacement battery tray and the difference is night and day. Looks like it was from the factory. The link below has a battery tray (Ford part number F81Z-10732-AB) for $37.13 before shipping. Enter this part number under the "2 - Search by Factory Part Number".
For the intake, you can buy a Napa 6637 filter and just take out the box you have and hook it up to the intake hose. I used a piece of 22degree 4" exhaust pipe from the local exh. shop to avoid the ribbed intake. I had to cut the exh. fitting on both ends to make it work. Like I said, about $60 total.
I bought an exhaust from rpmoutlet but there are many websites that have them and most just bolt right on. You can get aluminized(mine) or stainless for more money. I ended up taking out the muffler and using the tailpipe to route the exh. out the pass side in front of the back tire with a 6" tip I found at the itpdiesel site.
the compression brake- do you mean an exhaust brake? well, the 7.3 powerstrokes have a butterfly valve on the exhaust side of the turbocharger, that closes when the engine is cold, it aides in warm-up. alot of guys here convert the valve to an effective exhaust brake. i believe Kwikkordead's setup was only about $10-20. look on this page (its on the first page today), for Kwikkordead's topic called "my version of the ehxaust brake" good luck.
edit- you want a 22*. the bend is less severe. i am going to use a piece of exhaust pipe for mine, and im doing this intake setup on our 95 while im at it. so i will buy a 45* and then cut it in half, it should work.
