Unhappy Engine won't idle

My F150 recently started running rough, and now won't idle. The gas mileage is terrible! Someone said it was idle sensor, and to unhook battery to reset computer. That didn't help? The engine light stays on too. Will I have to have
someone hook computer up to it? Thanks.

What model year and engine cid? My sons 92 302 was doing the same thing and we had to replace a sensor on the drivers side of the throttle body; sorry, I can't remember what the sensor was called now. You can disconnec the electrical plug on the sensor to see if you get an RPM increase. Autozone was also able to test it for us.

Take it to autozone and have them read the codes, do not buy anything, come back here and post the codes and we will try to help you.

It is a 91 302. So if I disconnect the plug on driver side and RPM increases...it is bad? Thanks Bronco

That item on the drivers side of the throttle body is not a sensor, it's the Idle Air Control (IAC) Solenoid. There is a sensor on the bottom of the throttle body called the Throttle Position (TP) Sensor. It can cause this problem also.

MICBAR, if you unplug the connector and the idle drops then it's working. It's probably just stuck and dirty.

So the Throttle Position (TP) Sensor is located at the bottom? Any idea what color the wires at the connector are?

The connector I think they are talking about is the one on the IAC not the TPS.

Here is some photos of both.

Thanks for clearing up my phraseology! I was told that if you ever have to remove/replace the TPS, to make a mark on it and the throttle body to help with calibration.

Hey guys. I had a cougar with the 3.8 v6 that had the same type problem and it ended up being a large vaccum line on the underside of the upper intake manifold had come loose. Just something to think about. Tim
