I have a post going showing the progress of my rodstoration of a 71 F-100 titled "Finally getting it going (pics)". Well, I have come into an area where I need some input. I just took the seat and all the floormats out of the truck, so I can start working on rust removal/prevention. What I found was a lot more than I was expecting. Here's some pics. You can click on them to enlarge one at a time... http://photobucket.com/albums/b148/P...M/FLOORBOARDS/
As you can see, the passenger side is the worst. Almost the entire foot area needs to be replaced. It is also starting to creep up the kick panel. On the driverside you can see through the kick panel, but the foot area isn't as bad as the passenger side. The area under the seat is rust free. From what I can see, the affected area is isolated for the time being. Unfortunately, one of the cab mounts is eatin away (has been temp fixed), and the other is starting to corrode. From your experience, what steps should I take from here? Should I look for a cab that is in better condition, or should I work with what is here? I saw the cab mounts in an LMC catalog, and it looks like it consists of a rather large area surrounding the actual mounting point. I think with two of them, and maybe a little bit of sheetmetal I can square that away. I also think that I can cut, and replace these floorboards. All of this is going to be a great deal of work, but changing cabs would be too, I guess. What needs to be removed/loosened on the truck in order to replace the front cab mounts? Also, if you think I should just do sheetmetal, please let me know what type would do well, and where I can purchase it. Thanks in advance.

Mine was worse than that. You can get both replacement cab mounts and floor boards and weld them in. I got mine from JC Whitney for about $30-40 a piece. The cab mounts were bolt/weld in so I bolted them in. I had to undo the cab mount bolt and jack up the cab then slide the mount in over the old mount. They're not exact replacements. My neighbor welded in my new floor boards.
Thanks buddy. I was just starting to wonder about replacement floorboards. Those bolt in cab mounts sound good too. My father-in-law is an excellent welder, but it's kind of difficult to get him to crawl under a truck to do it. It sounds like I can cut away the rusted areas from the cab mounts that are there, pressure wash, and use spray on bedliner on them, then spray on bedliner on the new mounts, bolt them up, and have him weld in the floorboards. Then pressure wash, and spray the whole underside of the cab, as well as the interior floor. It will still be a lot of work, but rust should be a thing of the past once it's done I'll check out JC Whitney for the goodies. Thanks again.

It's definitely tougher to do the floors/cabmounts with the cab on the truck. I made my floors and cab mounts on my 65', which are real close to the 67'-72'. It was alot easier for me to change both at the same time (floors/mounts). My cab was off and laying on it's back. That is the cause for the whole problem, the cab mounts hold crap and end up rusting out the floor. When I made my mounts I made them easy to flush out. You said you have rust coming up the kick panel, you might want to check your vents on the side, this is another crap trap, it will rust out the outer lower vent behind your fenders. I have a pic in my gallery of how bad mine was. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I'm going to go with new replacement panels. It would be pretty tough for me to find a rust free cab around here to rob from. I'm going to give it a whirl with the cab on the truck. If it's too tough, I can always take it off later.

My floors looked almost exactly like yours. The best way to do it is have the cab off the truck. I don't know what level of resto you are going to do so that's a decision you'll have to make. I did a frame off resto on my 70 so it made things a lot easier. I replaced both cab mounts and both floor pans and had to fab patches for the kick panels. I got the pans and cab mounts from Dennis Carpenter. I tried one of the JC Whitney Cab mounts previously but they are pretty much designed to go over the old rusted out cab mounts. Also at first I didn't think my cab mounts were bad till I got the cab off the truck. They were rusted to the point that they would have failed if I hadn't replaced them. It's easier to put the floor pans in with the cab mounts off, if you decide to take the cab off. The new floor pans from Carpenter were a suprisingly good fit but I still had to get a good welder and fab man to help me fit them. I had to shim one of the cab mounts to make it fit properly. If you have Yahoo, PM me with your address and I will send you the albumn I made on the resto of my truck.
