Ok Qman Its been rainin here but got a better look at it today and i do see the plates and someone has tacked them on but looks like i might be able to pry them off with screwdriver or pry bar.I 'll see if i can soak them (bolts) with some WD40 or similar to see if i can get them off without breaking the bolts.you ever had any luck with that or you just torch'em off?
Well. we finally got my son a decent '98 Explorer, so 'Bubba' is off the road for good. I'm gonna use the entire chassis and drivetrain under my '64 short wide slick, so it will stay in the family. The whole chassis has been rebuilt and upgraded to disc brakes, so it should make a nice rig. I'm selling off the body parts; when I got it stripped down to where I could really see the front cab mounts, I realized that they were completely gone- not connected at all! The cab was being held on by the rear mounts and the steering column. Other parts of the truck, such as the floor were worse than I thought, too. I thought of finding a better cab, but I have a nice '64 I wanna upgrade, so that's the plan.
bigcity, I bought mine 6 years ago. Maybe JC doesn't carry them anymore. You can get the stock weld ons from one of the many Ford truck part manufactureres:
lmctruck.com
dennis-carpenter.com
That's just for starters. Dennis C's catalog is in a .pdf on line so you can see what he has to offer right away. LMC Truck's online ordering system is weak. But you can order their catalog which is loaded. I know I've seen the cab mounts I just don't remember where.
I can attest to cab mount that have rotted out causing severe problems. Several
years ago my dad was parking our 69 F-250 CS (complete rustbucket to boot)
on the street and the steering shaft broke in two just as he was parking!
Pretty lucky!
I got a steering column from a yard and replaced it, but I made the mistake of
putting 2x4s between the floor boards and the frame rails. There was already
1x material there so I thought the 2x4s would work. This only seemed
to accelerate turning the truck into a complete Flinstones vehicle!
Later since the cab mounts were completely gone just about, I made a solid
wooden mount which held up the cab and worked great until we picked up
a MUCH better 70 f-100.
I caulked and screwed galvanized sheet to fix the gaping holes in the floor.
That truck is being scrapped but it has been a source of tons of parts even
though a complete rustbucket.
I don't jury-rig like that anymore, but it was quick and worked at the time.
I drove it with wooden mounts for 4-5 years until the other truck came along.
When I make a gallery I will add a pic of this, since the whole front
of that truck has been removed. Someone will have a laugh at that I am sure!!
I got one on you. I bought my 72 at night. In the morning I was surprised to see the street through the floor boards. In repairing it I found hockey pucks between the frame and floor boards and 2x4s under the seat mounts. The steering wheel rested on your thighs. This was a real hunk. It's in pretty good shape now.
I'm looking at replacing the front cab mounts on my 69 F100. I found some at Mac's Antique Auto Parts for under $40 but they don't have the piece that goes under the frame. Is that a problem? I also would like any nuggets of knowledge about changing them out.
Must be cab mount month!! I just posted that I'm doing mine also. I'm not real quick to finish much anymore, but I don't redo much either. Anyway, block up truck, remove cab mount bolt, ease body up, drill out spot welds, set in new, mig the spot welds back.I'm doing the complete mount with the panel going aft attached. I drilled mine from a junk at a yard. [5$] Work in progress!! Seeya
