as many already know, i am doing an engine swap. the reberbished one i have is completely stock except for what the company did when the referbished it. for instance, the block is now .040-.060 over, the crankshaft is .010-.030 under, and if it the onther engine parts were not remanufactured, they were replaced with new parts. with the block being bored and the crankshaft being ground, is that going to give me anything at all? besides this, i am putting exhaust on it and intake and little things here and there. i also have a mechanic friend that can port heads. with everything stock, how much is the head porting going to give me? do i need to do anything else to go along with the ported head? should i get the head ported now, before i break in the engine, or should i drive the truck for a while (isn't it 1000 miles to break in a new engine?) then have him port the head? also, if he charges me, how much would you expect to pay for getting heads ported? i want to get some more power for pulling but don't necessarily need ole blue to hit 700 on the horsepower scale (though that would be pretty cool). any ideas or input would be appreciated. thanks.
Chris
Open up the bowl area and leave the ports alone, this will net you a little more hp with the stock cam.
By your mention of intake, sounds like this is a carbed engine, it would be a good time to put a little more cam in it to compliment the intake/ exhaust and head work. Comp cams has a couple cost effective camshafts, paw performance offers a cheaper generic grind but it works well for a mild application.
I would expect to pay $200-500 depending on whos doing it.
If you remove the valves on a head, you will see alot of material around the valve/valve guide out to the port wall, this is the "bowl" area. By taking the time to remove material and shape this area, you increase the heads ability to flow which equals more power.
You threw me completely off then when you said your adding intake, my question, what intake, as far as I know, stock is it?
It would still be a good time to upgrade the camshaft and do the port work, be a whole lot easier now, than later when its installed.
i am taking a class where i can port my heads for free (i just found this out this morning!! ) ...i know motorhead said to open up the bowl area instead...can i do both...i don't know much about this because i have never done this before....i can get all head work done for free and the guy said that he can do some other stuff to the ....valves....maybe.....
what is the best thing/things to do to get the most horsepower...remember, this is a mainly stock engine. thanks
