Fuel tank capacities

I know this topic has been covered in various ways and that the spec sheets cover the capacities for both the LB & SB trucks. My question is, has Ford or would a dealership ever have put the smaller tank in a long bed?

I have run my truck down until the fuel light comes on and then filled up. The most I have been able to put in is 29 gallons. I haven't really paid attention to the physical size of the tank when I have been under the truck doing maintenance. Are there any markings on the tank to indicate which tank size it is?

LB=38 gals
SB=29 gals

The thing is Ford's low fuel light comes on with about 4 gals left in the truck. If you top off the filler neck you get about 2gals more into the tank. I would not recommend this for a gas truck due to the fuel expansion. When I had the V10 I would add till the cost rounded the next whole dollar.

My sig did not show up in my post. My truck is a 2001, CC LB V10. I do know the capacities for both bed sizes, just curious if anyone has heard of the LB taking so little to fill up.

In the owners manual it talks about the "Low Fuel" light and when it comes on. My 99 did the same thing, my 04 PSD does the same thing. It keeps you from running dry before you fuel up.

wheel basehad alot to do with it also.
chk your wb center axle to center axle.
your truck if it has a 156 " wb came with 29gal.
172" got the 38 gal

No markings on the tank ,has there been mistakes from the factory? yes!
.from your description you only have a 29 gal.

I appreciate the quick replies, however I guess I didn't make post clear enough. I have the longbed crew cab. I know it's supposed to have the 39 gallon tank. I know the fuel light comes on to warn you, when you only have approximately 4 gallons left.

My question was to find out:
1) if anyone has heard of a dealer swapping out a the larger tank for a smaller one. I don't know anyone would, just a question.
2) Is there a marking on the tank itself to identify it's capacity.
3) What is the average fill for those with the 39 gallon capacity when the fuel light has come on.

I fill it up the majority of the time when it's just below a quarter of a tank and even that is only around 24 gallons max.

I have the exact same situation. I have 1999, SD, V-10, 4x4, SC, LB. I can go down to the red line and only put about 24 to 25 gal in. At half tank it’s right at 15 gal. I’m convinced I have a 29 gal fuel tank.

I saw a thread earlier today here about "Harpooning the tank". I can't find the link right now but I did happen to read it through and you will find it informative.

If I find it again, I'll try and find my way back here and link it!

So I am not the only one going crazy . I guess I will just have to resign myself that Ford did put in smaller tanks on the longer wheelbases as well. I have also seen the threads about "harpooning" the tanks, seems to mainly be the diesel crowd performing that mod.

On another note, any idea as to why my signature/info isn't showing in my posts?

Actually, it should be easy enough to find out. My tank is almost exactly 5 feet by 1 foot by 1 foot, or 5 cubic feet. I think there's 8.8 gallons per cubic foot, so this would be about 44 gallons, which is probably about right.

So you can determine the size of your tank by measuring its cubic feet.

That's a great idea, I didn't even think about doing something that easy. I will measure it in the morning.
Thanks

Barebones and others --- there's 7.48 gallons per cubic foot. Easy way to remember is 1-1/2 Jerry Cans per cubic foot ........... which at first glance doesn't seem to add up.
