carbed 85, 300 i6. 150k mi 3 speed tranny.
starts and ideles fine. pulls great when accelerating, but when i start cruzing it will chug like it's running out of gas. unfortunatly the fuel gague is inoperable. my truck stopped compleatly tonight, so assuming it was out of gas i hoofed it to gas station and got 2 gal of gas. walked back put that in and drove back to the gas station where it only took 5 gal to fill up.
a 7 gal gas tank dosent seem right to me. i bought this truck last week and i'm really diggin in. i'm guessing this truck was base model because it has pb only, no ac ps etc... so here are my questions
does this sound more like bad gas or water in the gas tank or a fuel pump?
where would a mechanical fuel pump on the be located?
did the base model come with an electric fuel pump?
is a hydraulic clutch standard?
what is the redline so i can set my tach (aftermarket, already on the truck)
why are lift kits cheaper then lowering kits?
It seems to me you would need the most power (and fuel) when you're accelerating, so I'm gonna rule out the fuel supply as a problem cause you said it accelerates fine.
The chugging sounds like it's either not times properly or there's a spark miss, but that would show up in accelerating. Therefore, I'm gonna suggest the carb needs rebuilding or the egr valve is crap. My original carb ran awful, particularly at idle, until I had it rebuilt.
Way back when we had a clogged fuel filter, the car idled/accelerated fine, it would appear to cut out upon cruising if not completely stop running...not saying its the problem but its possible.
I had a similar thing happen to me, fine under load but chugging/bucking at cruising speed. Turned out to be a serious vaccum leak (carb had come loose on it's mounts)
thaks for all the input. i'll be changing the fuel filter this week and see if that makes a difference. for the mean time i filled it up on high octane gas, and put in some feal system cleaner and octabe boost hopefully to burn out anything in the fuel system, the ignition system is stock i'm planning on changing the wires and plugs new weekend.
