So I bought an 1979 F350 4x4 with a 400 pickup recently. I got the title, and the VIN decdoes (on title) to a 1979 F250 4x4 with a 351M. Now, I'm defeintely not pleased. Did I get a fake F350 4x4 or did the previous owner didn't have the title for my pickup?
And I really need to find the F350's VIN! The plate on the door got ripped off. I was told there is another VIN on the frame..but where? I looked and looked but can't find it. Did Ford stamps any other VIN elsewhere?
Still can't find the frame VIN. What does that look like? A metal plate riveted to the frame? Numbers etched on frame? What? Is it under the hood or under the wheelwell outside of the truck?
Mine is so hard to locate,I had the truck 10 years before I found it.It is simply stamped into framerail.I found mine after degreasing engine comp.Mine is on flat part of frame on top but I understand it can be different depending on plant truck was made.Get a wire brush.Good luck.
Jer, it is stamped in the passenger side frame, on top and between the radiator and axle. Some times you may have to sand or use a wire brush, but it is there and hopefully you can find it.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
Well, I found it. It's not in any place you all said.
Guess where I found the VIN....way back! It was stamped near the exhaust manifold exit where it bolts to the pipe. Just slight above the firewall. This truck was built in Kansas City.
The VIN is F36SKDG9685.
I'm relieved this is a true F350 4x4 1 ton, what I was looking for.
Does the VIN sounds right? Some letters were diffcult to read and it was spaced between the engine ID and the assembly plant.
This also tell me the previous owner me the wrong title.
VIN decodes to this according to my book:
F36-F350 4x4 S-400 2v K-Kansas City DG9685-Oct 1978 build date My truck was built in Loiusville-I understand the VINstamping varies from plant to plant.Mine was a Jan 1979 truck.

Woah. What book is that? I must purchase it!
Sounds like my truck, almost...I still have the valve cover sticker information. I'll have to re-read it, but I remember it has an 1979 part number on the sticker.
My truck doesn't have an AIR pump, canister. I don't know if it has EGR. Of course, no cat, because of the weight rating.
