Well, chances are the e4od in the '91 f350 is shot ... and since I do long distance towing in remote country I'd like to install the highest reliability transmission I can get for a reasonable price ... definately not a racing tranny, its for a loaded f350 and I'll be towing a 25' boat weighing about 6K.
My mechanic recommends a Ford remanufactured unit because if it does poop out on the road, it's warranted and any dealership. I've read several other manufacturers offer e4od's with trick towing internals ... additional clutches, 'better' gears, etc. for higher durability. Some claim certain torque converters result in better mileage.
Fact or fluff?
What have you all done in this sort of situation? What has worked well and/or poorly for you?
i am nearly in the same boat as you. my E4OD is getting close to the end. Its slipping in reverse and the engine is putting out a 626 code Exessive trans slippage. My Ford dealer has me sold on a factory reman. its just a hard pill to swallow at 2200 bucks. The up side is every upgrade for my 93 will be done and from what i have learned there are quite a few. If you go to jo blows backyard tranny shop you willnot get 3 years 36000 mile warrenty and you might not get all the upgrades.
