I'm in the process of purchasing a 2000 XLT F250 regular cab with the 5.4 engine. It has 21K miles and was well kept in a garage. It is in very nice condition. Owner passed away and wife wants to sell it. She is asking 12K. Price seems ok for condition and miles.
Starting to have some concerns after doing some reading here. Wondering if the F250 will be under powered with the 5.4. I'm thinking with my use I would be ok here. Not a lot of heaving towing. Just hauling wood, coal, and other items from time to time.
The real concern is this spark plug blow-out I have read about. Makes you think twice about buying into a known issue. Wondering what others might think.
I have the 5.4 engine in my 2002 Expedtion and it has plenty of power. I also have the 6.0 desiel in my 06 F250, so I have compared both. Yes the 6 liter has a lot more power but the 5.4 will work for all but the most demanding tasks.
If you're not going to do any real serious towing then the 5.4 will be just fine. I know several people that are doing ok with these. I have a 7.3L but, I tow quite a bit.
I have an F250SD w/ 5.4. Plenty of power for daily driving. I also occationally pull a 14' Pace enclosed trailer loaded with NOS antique auto parts. Recently traveled to Hershey, PA for the National Meet and Flea Market from Virginia and had no problems pulling the load.
Boy that was a quick purchase. I think you will be fine with the 5.4 V-8. I have the 6.8 V-10, but I tow a 7k boat and wanted the extra power. The spark plug issue is something to watch, but in all reality the odds are great that you will have no problem. From what I have learned on this web site both the 5.4 and 6.8 have issues with the spark plug blowout. I have 112k miles and so far so good.
Actually I have been looking at this truck for some time. Was waiting on the financing when I happened onto this site and did some reading. Started to have some concerns a day or so before I was to get the truck and was wondering if I should back out. I just picked up the truck today.
Odd, just as I closed this deal I found a nice 2000 F250 super cab with the 7.3 PSD. Has 66K, not much for the PSD, and looks really clean. A bit more than what I paid for the F250 I got. Would like to have the PSD. :-)
I know what you mean. But I'm very happy with my gasser. More than enough power. I bought my 1999 SD V10 4x4 SC for $10,900 last Jan. I felt I got a good deal since the PSD were going for $16k. I only put about 5k miles a year on her so this was the better choice for me. Especially with the price of gas vs. the price of diesel....
