Auto or Manual Dilema

I think I have found a 460 to work with my truck. Now my problem is what type of trany do I want for it. The motor already has a C6 married to it. Should I stick with that or swap to a manual tranny? If I go manual what transmission works with the 460? My truck is currently a 3 speed.

This is one of those what do you like questions. Their both good ways to go. Just depends on what you like. I have a C6, but there are days I would like a standard tranny.

Auto or Manual Dilema

manual sucks in the city because of all the stopping and shifting, but it's better on gas. easier in snow and mud and what not too

auto - easy to drive. the lazy way to drive. now it's your choice. there both good, it's a matter of personal choice and preferace

Auto or Manual Dilema

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Mar-02 AT 03:29 PM (EST)]ok, this might help, an NP435 is a great manual tranny that from what i understand is virtually bullet proof, i've had several and i am switching from the C6 to the NP435, if my starter goes out i can push start my truck and i also really like the granny low 1st gear. if you are going to tow with the auto tranny be sure to get a good tranny cooler. if run both trannys in the mud and also for towing. the auto tranny is nice in the mud cause you don't lose your wheel speed in between shifts like you do with the manual.

if you plan on using a manual tranny, Summit tells me that if the 460 is 79 1/2 or earlier it is internally balanced. in this case it is possible to use a FE flywheel, clutch, pressure plate etc. but the FE bell housing will not work, you will need one from a 429/460 or a 351m/400m. be sure that if you do use the FE flywheel that it is not from a 428 or a 410 as they are externally balanced. i haven't yet done this swap using the FE flywheel on the 460 but Summit tells me that it will work. good luck and have fun.

Brian

Brian is right about using a FE flywheel for your 460, I've done that myself but still had to get the FE flywheel neutral ballanced. No body makes a standered flywheel for the internal ballenced 460.

Auto or Manual Dilema

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Mar-02 AT 09:20 PM (EST)]If I had that descion I would have to go with manual trans. A ZF 5-speed it will bolt right up to that 460 as long as it came from a 460. Remanufactored they run about 795.00 to 1000.00. They put the ZFs in '88-92or93 F250 or F350 trucks.

Auto or Manual Dilema

I lean to the auto, and the C6 is as good of an auto that you can get. Some folks just gotta shift, I can't understand why. I ride with my bud in his Ranger with 5 speed, every turn, every stop, he has to do the gear handle jig. Sometimes when we are talking he forgets to shift to 5th until he realizes the engine is reving.
To each his own. You will have to change the tranny or the column, either way it is not a direct bolt in.

Auto or Manual Dilema

Nay Nay Vampire! A fuel milage test ran by one of the Consumer Mag's (Right after the Gas Crunch of the 70's) discovered the Automatics get about one mpg more on the Hiway than the Sticks.

In town it's about the same. In a Hurry, the stick's have it for low speed (in town driving)

My personal choice for Reliablilty, low cost of ownership, and comfort of driving is the Automatic. That C-6 is referred to as a Bullet-proof trans. You can see thats true by reading these post's as well.
