The list has been long but this is my current problem. It's a 2004 6.0 4WD with less than 9K miles on it. My new problem is the starter. It keeps turning after the motor has started (up to 2 minutes). I took it to the dealership but I couldn't get it to repeat the same symptom. No word on it yet. The dealership here in SoCal has done great job of fixing the truck in the past. I can't complain the about the dealership's effort. Anybody else have starter problem like this?
When I started the truck, the motor and the starter were running at the same time. I then turn the key back to the off position and the starter still kept running. I can understand the key switch not releasing but not when the switch is turned off by hand. I have done search on this forum. It doesn't sound like a common problem.
Starter solenoid could be sticking. I think there are only two ways for starter to keep running - Ign switch failure that keeps 12 v applied to solenoid coil, or solenoid itself stuck. I'd replace solenoid first, just to rule it out. They're not awfully expensive, and easy to change. Good luck.
Many a day goes by when 12 volt feedback through the eletrical system could be polorized. Take a compass and pass it over the starter. if the needle moved 90 degrees, you have polorized current flow through your system.
I had a larger truck that would do that if the voltage got low,ie.didnt start fast and took a few tries. the only way I could get it not to hang in the run position( starter running) was to add a ground to the starter. extra cable to the frame. that ended the problem. may be what astovan man was talking about good luck Phil

Wow thats a weird one. I guess you learn something everyday...
The truck has been at the dealership for 3 days now. No word on it yet but the service rep did tell me there was 2 other trucks a head of me. The truck is more for pleasure so I don't stress. I will let you know how this bottoms out.
does your truck have the starter relay on the firewall. I have seen them do the same thing in the past. wires somehow where toching and was allowing power across it to the starter. Causing the starter to do like you where saying. GL
I picked up the truck on 11/16/05 from the dealer. They could not duplicate the same problem. They did pull the starter and found no damage to the starter or the flex plate. I drove the truck on weekend and I had the starter remain on after I turned the motor off only once. As with some electrical problems, this one is intermittent. This means it won’t be fixed until it happens at the dealership. I thought of having the dealership replace the starter at my expense but haven’t got it through my head why I should pay for something that should be under warranty. I looked on Ford parts Internet sites and wondered the same thing (along with the cost: about $200.00 +or -). Where is the starter solenoid? From the diagrams shown on the sites, it is attached to the starter.
sounds like this could cause a fire or wiring harness to melt. i have seen this many times at my dealership, mostly because people have keys cut and they dont cut well and the customers just dont pay attention

OK, I'll bite - how could the key cause the starter to keep running if the key turns to the "off" position? I can see it if the key itself sticks in the start position, otherwise ....... what am I missing?
