i have been having a ton of trouble with some noises from the front-end. sqweeks and some knocking. some of you guys have read this thread already and replied with helpful ideas and i appreciate them all. i had put in new belts, idler-pulley, and just recently i tried a new alternator. the sqweel gave way to a knocking noise after i changed the belt so i could have sworn it was coming from the alt. but this would not be the case. i was so fed up i took it to the dealer and they found the problem, finally. it was the tensioner like some of you said it might be. it sounds as good as it did five years ago and 83,000 miles. now i can enjoy my ride again. yea! thanks again guys.
Out of curriousity, how much did it cost for the tensioner and how much was it to install it???
all together it came out to be $188.28 out the door. the tensioner was like $50 bucks, rest was dealer and taxes and environment charge. i was willing to pay just about anything at that point. $188 wasn't as bad as i expected.
Great to hear you got it fixed, even if the stealership did it!
yea i wish i'd a fixed it myself but what cha gonna do. honestly, i don't feel all that bad about it. i know its fixed and fixed right and i don't have to be embarrassed anymore because of the noises.
Yeah that's not bad overall, saved you the work and you can always know it was done the right way. I mean after all the guy gets paid to fix stuff, might as well let him have at it.
Great that it's all well and good now!
i've heard that the tensioner is a pain to install anyhow. is that right? there is a spring, somewhat strong and has to go in a certain way and the spring gives you a problem plus that pesky fan is in the way!
$50 is good, i'll probably have to replace mine soon, My freind works at a dealer and can get a discount. Even if it takes me 2 hours to replace, it's better then letting my truck sit at the dealer all day till 4pm and then complaining until they fix it cause i want my truck back. My extended warranty deductable is $50, So thats good i can fix it myself for the same price.
well good luck. hope it goes well. let us know how it went. i'm currious just how difficult it is. i work nights so while my ride sat at the dealer, i was snoozing. when it was done and ready to be picked up i literally walked to the shop and off to work i went. works out really well for me, the dealer is only three blocks from me!
The fan can be removed. Does anyone have any specific directions on it? Bc I always have somewhat of a 'chirping' that is annoying as all get out. I'm mechanically inclined and love to do stuff on my own, so I'm content with doing it myself.
yea the fan can be removed. i'm also mechanically inclined but i just got a bit aggravated with it and i really didn't think the tensioner could make these noises. as far as i could tell its only one bolt but i have a feeling once you loosen it its gonna come flying off like all "get out". then its gonna be some fun gettin the new one on. the spring inside is the tough part and there just might be a special tool required. i'm just glad i got it done and it really didn't cost me a whole lot. i to love working on my rig but when i see something that looks like a problem job i take it to the pros.
