Squeaking steering column

Not always, but sometimes, the steering column squeaks. Usually when I'm driving staight and just moving the wheel slightly from side to side. It's getting on my nerves. Anyone know what it is and how to fix it?

I had a similar problem with my 97. The plastic on the back of my steering wheel was rubbing on the plastic around the column. A dab of vaseline where the two were contacting got rid of the noise. Six months now and the sound has not come back. I seem to remember mine did it more when cold and that I heard it when driving straight making slight corrections. Sounded like a squeek.
