I have a stupid question. I haven't dealt with a manual tranny in a newer vehicle before. I know the old ones had "doping" or a grease in them. Do the newer ones have fluid? How often do they need flushing/changing? I have a 1999 F150 4x4 Sport package with the 4.6 and 5 speed manual. It has 94,500 miles on it. I just repaired the rear window leak, odometer black out, and clogged EGR ports on my truck and it is running great. Thanks to all the guys who contribute to the forums, you've saved me a LOT of money!
I change my tranny fluid every 30,000 miles. only takes ten minutes. the M5OD uses straight MERCON transmission fluid. I got this tip from this forum and it works great. get about 5 or 6 feet of tubing and a funnel, then when you go to fill the transmission back up run the tubing down the engine compartment and get a friend to pour the fluid while you hold the tubing in the transmission. goodluck!
Ditto above.
I sold my 2000 model w/ the M5OD. It had 170,000 miles on it and never any problem.
Fluid change is easy, and cheap planned maintenance.

Thanks for all the input. I will check it out this weekend. I don't have the manual - bought it used. Had to change the alternator today. I can't complain, my brother in law has a Chevy Silverado the same year as my F150 and has put 2 water pumps and an alterator on his.
