Question speed limiter

I have a 2001 ranger with the 3.0 engine. I was thinking of purchasing a chip from diablo. Does anyone have any information on these chips. Will this chip increase top end speed and will i need to run higher octane fuel with this chip?

higher octane fuel is only necessary if you increased the compression ratio, and built the engine as a high performance motor. if the compression ratio is stock, regular unleaded will be just fine.

To get the advantages from the chip, you WILL have to run the higher octane fuel. The folks at Motorhaven are very knowlegable and can answer any questions re the Diablo.

Instead of the chip, you might want to spend the extra money and get a programmer. The guys at Moterhaven put 3 separate programs in the one I bought from them. So including the stock program, I have a total of 4. I can run regular 87 octane everyday. Then switch to 91 or 93 whenever I feel like "playing." Takes about 5 minutes or less to reprogram.

The reason for the higher octane fuel is because the chip advances the ignition timing which will cause pinging under load with the lower octane fuel. I think the chips are a waste of money. You have to run the higher octane fuel to take advantage of the possible 15 HP you might gain at full throttle and you have to pay $0.20 pr/gal more for fuel. My truck is fine the way it is and don't need to go faster then 90 MPH anyways. In CA if you are caught going over 95MPH on the highway they can arrest you for wreckless endangerment. If you are racing somebody that fast, they now will seize your vehicle and crush it.

While I do agree with Jim about chips not being worth it in the end, I do like the switchable programmer, that is pretty spiffy.

I do actually have a reason to have a 90MPH capable truck, highway 45 between Dallas and Houston averages between 85-95MPH depending on where you are. And yes, the state troopers go that fast, too. What's amazing is it has one of the lowest crash rates of the highways in Texas.

I agree with Pilot. Programmers are much better than chips and IMO worth the extra bucks. Jim, if you're ever on the 2 lane between Palmdale and Apple Valley, trying to pass an 18 wheeler doing 75, then you know why I want (need) more than 90MPH. I don't use it to cruz, just to pass.

Yes something about just BARELY going faster than an 18 wheeler just is not fun, at all... If I have to pass an 18 wheeler, I do tend to get into a low gear and go, and go fast. I don't want to be behind them and I don't want to be beside them.

I'm told that my Ranger govenor will kick in at about 92. That's good to know, but I have never verified this and don't expect to. Maybe it's just me, but I never have any problem getting from point-A to point-B quickly and safely, including passing slower vehicles.
