c4 to AOD

hi, i am looking at swaping out my c4 transmission in my 79 ford ranger, with a aod, both trannys now are mounted to 302's. the aod is coming out of a 84 grand marquis. i was wondering if i am going to encounter and major problems and if there is any way of beefing up the aod, ex. shift kit, lock up torque converter? thanks in advance.

P.S. i am looking at doing this as cheap as possible so anylittle tips would help thanks.

You are going to have to change more than just the tranny. You will need the computer from the donor as well and probably some of the wiring harness.

You won't need a computer or wiring harness for that trans. It is not electronically shifted. What you will need is the TV cable from the Grand Marq. It is a cable that runs from the trans to the accelerator linkage. This cable is adjustable and controls the shifting. Be sure it is adjusted correctly. If it is not it can damage the trans. As for making it a tougher unit, I don't really know. I do know that the AOD's in trucks and the ones behind 5.0L HO's are more heavy duty and have more clutches. You should be fine with it as long as you don't abuse it or tow anything real heavy. If you do tow with it just "baby it" a little and you'll be fine. You may find that your rear end gear may be a little high for the AOD. If you have a 3.00 gear or higher it may lug a little and get poor mileage in town. If you have a 3.25 or lower you should be fine. A 3.50 - 3.73 is ideal.

The reason you will nned the computer is because the ignition curve is going to be totally different than that for a c4. If you don't change it, look for holes in the tops of your pistons.

Okay guys. His c4 is not an overdrive type tranny. He will be installing an overdrive. That means that the motor will be running at a reduced rpm- by .33 to be exact. The computer in his truck is not programed to deal with the lower rpm and load requirements it is going to be dealing with. It will be trying to run in an advance state of timing. This preignition is will beat the tops out of the pistons. It is going to knock to beat the band when it's in overdrive and all the fuel upgrades ain't gonna help. But heres the good news, try it anyway, I can always use more business.
