Ford has at least two engines named after ancient gods: Triton and Vulcan. If anybody copied anybody on the "dura" part, GM copied Ford. I think the Duratec showed up in the Taurus cars starting in 1996, it may have been in the Contour as well.

It doesn't designate anything, a lot of the European Duratec engines are barely related, it was just a marketing thing to get back at Opel and Vauxhaul for thier "Ecotec" engines (whose name has equal technical significance).
Going way back to the mid-70's, Chevy called that disasterous aluminum Vega engine the 'Dura-Built' after they figured out how to keep the head gaskets from leaking!
