i see a lot of people here talking about having a PCV system hooked up. as long as i had my trucks, i NEVER ran a PCV--ever---i just ran 2 open breather caps which vented the vapors directly to the atmosphere...am i hurting my engine by running it this way?

Yes, you can be. One of the natural by-products of combustion is water. This can form condensate in the crankcase, because there is always a certain amount of blow-by past the rings. The water can form an acid in the oil and be hard on the bearings. Plus there is always a little fuel that gets by the rings too. This can dilute the oil over time. All this stuff floating around in the crankcase can for the most part be sucked out and burnt by the engine if the engine is run at normal operating temperature and a PCV system is used. The PCV system will actually evacuate the crankcase, and pull fresh air in to replace the vapors. The PCV system is a good thing, and will not hurt performance if the carb was originally designed for it.
If the PCV system is not functioning, the motor oil will quickly become contaminated and heavy sludge accumulations will begin to form. Internal parts, not protected by the motor oil, will begin to rust and/or corrode due to the water and acids that will become trapped within the crankcase.
But a lot of dragster engines have a hose running from the valve cover to the collector on the header with a backfire valve. I assume this siphons off the crankcase vapours into the exhaust???

Yes, but this is to create a vacuum effect in the crankase to aid in ring sealing and squeak out that last tiny bit of horsepower - very bad idea for many reasons on a street driven vehicle.
