hello guys! well my girl...friend has a 01 Ranger. It was a work truck before she got it. Well she told me to drive it the other day so i did. I found out something isnt right. When the car gets warm and you go to shift (its 5 speed) the rpms with gradually increase to about 4k intill you release the clutch. it also does this when you put the car in netural. But heres the weird part. If you leave it in netural and slow down it will continuely rise intill you come to a complete stop that it will drop to normal idle. WEIRD! i dont know jack about ford trucks. i drive a nissan but everything is very different lol.
My first guess would be a TPS. im really not sure though. can someone else shed some light on this? Also is there an online FSM (factory service manual) that i can download. i know the forum for my car has them so you can download them. If not ill go pick up a hanyes manual.
My truck idles at a higher rpm if you are moving. It usually idles at 600-700 rpm but if you were driving down the road and put it in neutral and just let it coast it will idle at 1,100 rpm untill you stop. I'm think tat 4k is way too high to idle. I would suspect the idle air control valve or possibly a vacuum leak. I'm not sure how to diagnose a back IAC but i'm sure somebody else in here will know, and probably the first thing everybody is going to say is take it down to autozone and have them pull the codes. Autozone will do it for free.
Three things come to mind. Like Jim mentioned, the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) could be bad. Vacuum leaks are thalso something I would look for. Or, it could be that the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is bad.
There are no online factory service manuals to download; however, AutoZone has some fairly decent repair manuals available online for viewing at their website.
Oh yeah i forgot about the ECT, i remember reading about that in here. If the truck gets hot it idles faster and the sensor could be out of wack making it idle too high.
Yeah but 4K? Could the busted sensor really push the idle that high. Could the IAC even carry it to 4K? I doubt it. Could be the IAC, TPS. But yuppers, go pull the codes at Autozone (but don't let them sell you anything).
My mom used to own a 91' t-bird and one day she started it up in the morning and the car just reved all the way up to red line and sat there untill she turned it off. It turned out to be the throttle position sensor. So a stupid little sensor can sometimes cause the motor to freak out.
