Need Courtesy / Cargo Light Help

Just bought a 1997 Ford F 150.

None of the courtesy lights or the cargo lights work.
The map lights work with swich.

I also noticed none of the buzzers or chimes work.

I've checked the fuses. All OK
I think the relays are all good.
I sprayed the door latches with wd40.

I'm thinking the previous owner disconnected the buzzers.
Would that disable the courtesy / cargo lights as well.
I looked under the dash and I see nothing unplugged.

I can really use some help on the one.

Sounds like a faulty door switch. That is in common with the lights/chimes. Do the dome/cargo lights come on when the passenger door is open, If they don't work with the passenger side either, I would say something has been disconnected.

They don't come on when any door is open. I think somethings disconnected. Just don't know where to start.

I don't know where they are located on your truck. Some of the older trucks had the chimes and buzzers behind the glove box.

We need to start keeping track of this stuff. The previous owner was probably on here several years ago asking how to disconnect the buzzer. And now you want to re-connect them. Maybe we can get the automakers to make all this programmable, so you can custom configure your truck without messing with wires.

That's a good idea.
I don't care about the chimes either but I do want my courtesy lights to work.

The nearest diagram I have is a 1999. See if some of this stuff jives with your truck.

In the fuse box under the hood you should have a

battery saver relay

courtesy light relay

The way it is wired, it is controlled by the Gem module. But we can do a little test and possibly narrow the problem down.

The headlight switch has a manual override that will turn the interior lights on. You should be able to twist it in one direction all the way to make them come on. This tirggers the courtesy light relay directly.

If this doesn't work, we then know we have a courtesy light relay problem, or a battery saver relay problem. See what you find out.

The headlight Manual Override does not turn on the lights.

Would it work even if something were disconnected?

How do I check the Relays?

Make sure fuse #14 is good. It's a 15 amp.

If that's good, it looks like there is a problem with the GEM module. This module controls the battery saver relay. It's supposed to be located on the firewall in the interior of the truck, behind the dash. See if there is any water damage around it.

The battery saver relay feeds the courtesy lamp relay, which feeds the courtesy lamps.

I have the same problem in my 03. The interior light works with the passenger door, but does not work with the driver side door. I just bought it a couple of weeks ago, and it's possible the previous owner did something to it. I just don't know where to start looking to correct it.

Look for a black/yellow wire coming from the door. If you ground this wire to a good metal ground, the dome light should come on. This wire goes to the GEM module which does all sorts of things, including controlling the dome lamp.

The one on the passenger side is a black/pink wire.

Thanks for the information. I located the brown/yellow wire at the harness, and i assume that it goes to the gem after that. I took the wire out of the harness and grounded it. The dome lamp came on, so now what is my next step to getting this thing to work with the door switch? thank you very much.

Randy, I would make sure that the relays are in place for the battery saver and dome light, also another step would be to check the lamps in the dome light themselves. you should be able to hold you thumb on the dome relay, run the dimmer switch to the top and feel it click. If it clicks then I would think it probably more the lamps are missings, if it doesn't then fuses to the dome and battery saver, after that, I am at a loss.

Looks like the previous owner pulled both relays so I will go buy those and see what happens.

Thanks for all the help.

I'll be back
