I've got a lead on a truck for cheap. It's a 67-72 (I'm hearing it second hand so the info is lacking and kinda sketchy). $800 bucks supposed to be clean and nice but the FE has a cracked block. So if I bought it I'd swap a small block Ford into it. Is there any advantage in a stroked 302 (347) over just putting together a 351W? Is there any sort of wiring kit to possibly swap a 5.0 EFI engine in? The guy (my cousin) told my dad that it's in good shape, other than the engine, but this is also the guy that didn't think buying a tub for his jeep at night in the rain was that bad an idea.
I didn't ask about FE's did I? The mounts I could build if I had to. I'd be looking at a trans rebuild anyway so swapping it wouldn't be an issue. I'm not towing so a 351 will have all the grunt I need. 302's are cheap and easy to build, I'd think a 347 with tougher than stock components would be fine for reliability. The guy that's telling us about this truck also has a freshly rebuilt 390 sitting on a stand, so if I was so inclined i could get that for cheap, but I'd rather have something better on gas. Small blocks were an option in later trucks so mounts would be an easy to find junk yard part.

You are just getting replies from people like me who would run an FE no matter what. There is usually nothing between the I-6 and FEs for us. A 302 or 351 would suit your needs and since the 302s were offered in our trucks, parts should be no problem. I don't think you will see much difference in economy, but run what you want. If you go to the engine forums, you will probably find the answers you are looking for.
The economy thing is true, the more I think the more I think I'll become a pig headed FE owner like the rest of you guys. Thing is, my cousin would probably sell me the 390 for dirt cheap, like $500 for a rebuilt engine that hasn't been started cheap. He's got an excess of engines now, the 390 for was his beater truck that has since been stolen. He's selling his AMC 401 for about half what he put into it because he made the last minute decision to put a 460 in his Jeep (the thing is beastly enough anyway, well it would be if he ever got it running).
TK,you can always put the 390 in for now and drive it while working toward the small block for later. Having driven trucks with both, I just prefer the FEs. Do what suits you.

If you are going with the 351w, build it or you'll be disappointed. My 68 has that engine and I'm less then impressed. I'm heading to Iowa next weekend to pick up a parts truck with a good 390 for a spring conversion.
I've got a 351 W with a 2V intake and carb, C-6 tranny in mine. I know it will be down on torque from the FE, but with today's gas prices I'll be able to get by a bit cheaper driving it. Oh yeah, the 4V 390 is still sitting in a corner of the shop!!!!

I would go with a 351W instead of the 347 do to the expense of machine work and a stroker crank. The 347 is more of a mustang thing because the 5.0 guys already have the 302 block. I did a 351W swap in my 67 without a whole lot of issues. You will need some motor perches out of a 70's model pickup as the small blocks didn't come in the F-100's until 70. Also, the bolt patern for your tranny will not match. So you will need to get a different bellhousing or transmission depending on which type of tranny that you have. As far as FE motors are concerned my cousin has an early 70's model with a 390 and my 351 walks all over it.
Hey J&T, let's see some pictures. The more the better!
I have an idea, crewzmaster seems to have a lot of time on his hands while he is in Iraq. Any of you guys have some old truck/car mags full of pictures that you could send him. You can click on his user name and email him for an address to send them to.
