I could use some help determining what the battery light on means: Is it the batteries or the alternator?
When the problem began I still had the factory batteries, after a week of the battery light on the starter began to drag. So I put in on a battery charger over night and it was good for another week. I decided to drop in a set of red top optima's anyway, since the stockers were corroding and making things ugly. The light is still on however, anyone recommend changing the alternator? The local parts shops cannot (or don't know how to) check the alternator with a dual battery set-up.

Just went through the "battery light on" issue. I had a bad alternator, but before it died entirely, it took a fusible link with it. This link is on the passenger side fender on my 99 PSD and is one of 2 pair of wires coming off the starter relay. Nobody seems to sell the fusible link, but NAPA can sell you the fusible wire and you can crimp on a couple ends. Worked for me.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the standard PSD alternator was 130 amp output. I thought Ford tried a 110 amp for a bit, 2001 I think, and then went back to the 130 amp alternators. I think I remember reading somewhere, they (Ford) had so many problems with the 110s, they went back to the 130s. I can find the specs for like the '97, '99 and 2000 and they were all 130 amp alternators for diesel engines. I can't find the spec for 2003.
