I drove the truck about 60 miles last night and with everything off (blower, ac, heater) the truck seems to be warming the cab some how. I'm not sure if I have a hole in the firewall or if vents are open.
What can I check or look for to prevent it from warming up in the cabin....
The exhaust leak that I have is also causing the cab to smell like burnt diesel.
does your steering column get hot/warm?
mine (and apparently a few others) does that.
Seems normal, I guess since the exhaust manifold is so close to the steering.
OK several things.
If your vacuum pump is weak the heater defaults to defrost position.
The coolant always circulates through the heater core.
So if the vacuum is low, the heat is coming out the defroster.
Also if you are getting a lot of exhaust smell in the cab you may have a hole in the firewall letting engine compartment heat into the cab.
another thought...
regarding the 'burnt diesel smell'
If the return lines leak a lil, that diesel will get on the top of the engine and stink the place up.
I took off the heater core shroud once to change a leaking heater core, noticed that the only thing that keeps the heat from coming in is a small trap door which pivots to either let the heat in or keep it out,if that door doesn't close all the way the heat will come continuously in the cab no matter what you do.The heated fluid does a continuos journey from the engine, through the core and back to the engine, no stop or bypass valves at all on the circuit!!
Saigon
mine has neither, just a rubber mat... good thing southern georgia doesn't get hot.
gotta love the old 'custom' series. I like rolling up windows and bench seats :P
heck if I got comfortable, I'd probably fall asleep driving home from a jobsite.
