My 17 year old son just came home with a '70 Commando that his grandparents gave to him. It has a V6 in it - I was wondering what displacement it was, sounds like 231 cubes, eh? It's pretty stock with the exception of headers, and only a little rust. The transfer case handle doesn't seem to be connected to anything, so I guess it's stuck in 2 high. The manual hubs say "Sears and Roebuck / Allstate" on them - never knew Sears was into that kind of gear.
Hope this doesn't turn into a money pit like some of the other "Free" cars I had. I can see a fair amount of homebrewed engineering on it, but at least I'm not looking for too many replacement parts (yet).
After looking at vehicles that saw every New England winter in their life, finding something solid of this age is rare.
Not many bone yards like this around anymore. Most out my way don't keep anything older than 5-10 years.
We had a real old yard over in Lancaster that kept cars for decades. It was cool seeing '55 Chevys with the old 265 V8 still in place and the wrecked 1950's Studebakers.
Does it still have the buick 231 v6 in it?Commandoe's rule but hard to get parts for.
Back then it was like 225 cubes and 3.7L. It was also used in Buick's Skylark during the 1960's.
Buick also had an aluminum 215 cube V8 back in the day. It later was bought by British Leyland and became the 3.5L motor used in the Rovers and Land Rovers.
so the link is pretty old, Vijay. I revived the thread thinking he'd have it running good by now. My son's Jeepster needs a bit of TLC and I thought I might get a few tips and suggestions.
