I have a 95 F150 S/C 4x4 5.8l, and have had a continual problem with the serpentine squealing. a new belt does OK for a while, but then it squeals too. I have replaced the tensioner and idler pulley, to no avail. Any ideas to help me from going insane?
try takin off the belt and see if u can turn the pulleys and see if they have a lot of drag? maybe that will work. or a stethascope up them whenthe cars on to see which ones doin bad
If you don't have a stethoscope you can use a "sounding stick". It's a 1/2" dowel of hardwood ($2 at home depot). You touch one end of the dowel to the device you want to listen to, and put the other end to your ear. THis helps isolate some of the weird squeeking, rattling, and chattering often found in pulley systems.
Check the smog pump, I used to have fits with the same thing. I took my smog pump off when I swapped my 5.0 to a 5.8 and haven't had a squeek yet. I don't know if it was always the pump itself or something else. I had to find a custom length belt for my application, the one a found was just long enough to get on the pullies with the tensioner just about bottomed out, so the belt has quite a bit of tension on it now. Alot of 87-96 trucks get this way, usually worse when it is damp or dusty out. everyone I know that has had one says they had the same problem at some point, mine would shut up for awhile when I put a new belt on once. It may just be the belt but I have heard of the vanes in smog pumps squeaking before.
