Brand new to the forum and to the truck world. This is the very first truck I have ever owned, so I am very raw on what to do and not do...Was actually a sport compact guy before, so this is a big change for me...
I purchased a 2005 SuperCrew 5.4L XLT, I am thinking of doing a Cold Air Intake and Throttle Body spacer soon, was wondering if this is a good idea or not? If anyone has experience with these on a newer SuperCrew, and if so what brand or brands are the best to go with...I am trying to create better fuel economy, thought this may be the best way. Again any advice is appreciated and look forward to chatting with you guys and gaining some of your knowledge....If anyone has any other ideas of perforance mods that will help, please chime in....Thanks again.
Personally, I think the first mod you do should be to get a new chip tune; I've got the Superchips 1745 and I noticed a big difference in performance. Others get the XCalibrator 2 with custom tunes. (The value of the latter has a lot to do with who designs the tunes.) The XCal folks swear it beats the pants off the stock Superchips tunes, and if it does, it's probably worth the extra $$, because the Superchips tuner is pretty nifty...
Welcome to FTE Tanner06. Every throttle body spacer I have run across is a waste of money. Im not a CAI fan either (the factory setup is already a cold air style...) Like JS2003 mentioned, the best bang for your buck is a tuner. I personally have a Superchips 1714 for my 04, and I love it.
Throttle response is really weak etc... so a chip is in order. I dont want to run high octane gas. With the 87 program does it simply improve throttle response and make the tranny not so lazy?
Is it possible Ford programs the computer for "break in". After certain mileage milestone(s), the program changes accordingly? Just got to thinking about that... it would make sense.
OFF Topic: Anybody know a good place to get OEM rims/tires (new/used) cheap? All they had in stock was the chrome steel wheels (which arnt that bad looking) and an undersized General Tire (BAD).
The motor will get stronger during the first 3k miles or so. Give it a little bit of time. Most 87 tunes do improve both throttle response and tranny characterstics. They cannot provide anywhere near the power gains of the premium tune though (then nature of how the chips work).
There is no "extra" energy in premium fuel. Higher octane fuel will allow your engine to run with more advanced spark timing which will give you more power - that's the only benefit of premium fuel. And if you're not running a program which advances the timing then there is really no benefit to premium fuel.
regarding your question about where to go for rims and rubber. I picked up a set of FX4 alloy wheels @ E Bay new take offs for $250/ 4. I would suggest you try e-bay as many reputable companies offer new take offs at deep discounts
Thanks guys for the responses. After some of your posts and talking over performance with a buddy of mine that has an Excurison. I think I am going to start with the tuner, then add an exhaust, and then go for the BBK throttle body. I'll keep you updated on how it all works out...Once again if anyone has any particular brands that they have used and have worked out well, please let me know. Haven't quite figured which exhaust set-up to go with yet....
You said "...I am trying to create better fuel economy,".
These modifications may allow you to make more peak horsepower but I would not expect fuel economy to be improved. A bed cover will help fuel economy.

Hey Tanner06, FYI- I just installed a Borla single, side exit type exhaust system on my Supercrew today. No real performance gains but what an improved sound! I haven't had the system on the highway but it sounds awesome at idle and while cruising around town. The Borla system fit beautifully and was no problem to install by myself. Good luck and enjoy your new ride!
