I was just thinking the same thing, I was trying to figure out the "clunk", and was thinking about the shift points for the tranny. It seems like sometimes I have to force a downshift, and CLUNK

Mine does it ONLY on forced downshifts, when the tranny can't decide if it wants to downshift or not, usually from 2nd to 1st @20 mph. I know it could be slack in the driveshaft or rear end, but if the tranny stopped doing that, I would stop getting the clunk altogether.

Mine does what yours does, but also when coasting, when you lightly hit the throttle, sometimes clunk.

My '05 S Cab 4x4 does this too. I wish they sold the manual tranny so I could decide when and how hard to downshift I'm driving in the city so I've got lots of slowing down and this is a considerable annoyance.

the manual tranny would've been a no-brainer for me. I'm not a huge fan of electronic trannies deciding what gear I should be in, nor of it's "learning" my shift patterns due to driving style. I find that it gets worse when I drive in "gas miser" mode, with low RPM's and lower speeds around town. Maybe beating on it a bit would smarten the tranny up a bit.

Lemon That Thing :)

I am in the process of lemoning my clunker....read up my posts (search Phrekkle) I have been approved for arbitration (FL) and just had my pre-hearing inspection, where the service manager agreed it clunks, and says the transmission is at fault (duh, i said that at 2k miles, and they've been fiddling with the driveshaft ever since.)

They tried to offer a 5-75kmile warranty and "repair" .....kiss my rump, i want all my money back.

sad though, i love my pickup.

i think there should bee a class action suit......there are so many of us with this issue, and they know how to fix it.....but tranny replacements are expensive, not to mention they mes with the integrity of the vehicle.

Why can't they just sort this out, either with new software or a new tranny if need be. I don't want a rebuilt tranny in a new truck, nor do I want to constantly have to grease my driveshaft yokes to keep masking the problem temporarily. Also, there seems to be no consistency between dealers on how this situation is handled. Ford's national headquarters needs to address this ASAP.

Sorry to hear about the truck Phrekkle.

same frustrations.....

I guess I have the same problem.....I too have a 04 FX4 with the 3.73 LS axle. My tranny does the same thing sometimes....and the rear-end grinds during sharp turns. I also have a very noticeable vibration at highway speeds when Im towing any kind of load.
It only has 15000. Mine is at the dealer right now. They have so far said that it is the tires. I can easily agree with them if they are saying that the tires are wearing in a strange way. But common sense would indicate that whatever problem the truck has is causing the abnormal tire wear.
I have very good TOYO tires on the truck, and they already told me they would replace them, but that is so frustrating.......
I have to agree with you guys, why cant they just fix whatever the problem is. I dont see why they cant figure it out. They have been building and maintaining great trucks for years. I love my truck, but I dont want to drive the cheap rental around all the time why they keep putting new tires on my truck

Good News I Hope..... Took My Rig In To Another Ford Dealer On Saturday..... They Did A Pcm Update .... Seems Like My Problem Has Gone Away At This Time.... I Am Keeping My Fingers Crossed..... The Transmission Seems To Shift Alot Different Than It Did.... More Low End And The Shift Points Seem A Little Higher.... I Am The Original One Who Started This Post..... Be Interested To Find Out If Anyone Else Has Had The Pcm Update.... My Rig Is A 2005 That Was Delivered In Oct 2004..... Thanks

jim,

I was thinking the exact same thing that this is a computer problem with shift points, more specifically downshift "decision-making" by the tranny. I get no clunking during upshifts (although the tranny seems to hesitate sometimes with low throttle, low speed shifts) or in any other gear besides the 2nd to 1st downshift. No vibration on highway, no slack even if I manually try to twist the driveshaft (old u-joint test). She's tight as a drum aside from that one glitch. Although it does seem that most people posting to this thread have the 3.73 LS, Hmmmmmm...

I was wondering if anyone with a tuner installed experiences this, as the chip should alter shifting points.

I started a thread with this idea, no one bit....
