Well, it's time for us to plan our anniversary trip. The wife and I decided on Vegas. Ha ha, like you guys haven't read that last year. Anyway, the kicker is I would rather fly. For some odd reason, she thinks it would be a good idea to drive.
So, on to mapquest I go. 20 some hours, through Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, a bit of Arizona and finally Nevada.
Now, I hate sitting on my butt for any extended period of time. A plane is pretty bad. But a car takes so much longer. So, let's see. 2 hours in a plane, or 20 in a car. I smell a winner. But nooooo. She wants to drive through the dessert. Mind you, I ain't no geography major, so I don't know what kind of terrain we'd be driving through, but it looks like a lot of high mountain passes. Did I mention we'd be driving in DECEMBER!?!
My brother in law has done the drive through all kinds of weather and tells me September would be the best time of year to undertake a road trip of this magnitude.
Anyway, I figured there was a more "direct" route that mapquest wouldn't give me, so I wanted to ask you guys. I'd like to stick with I 5 for as long as possible, even though it is pretty boring. Where would I turn off to go east to Vegas?
Hopefully, my brother in law and I will finally talk some sense into my wife to take the plane by then.
Once you get to neveda its still 10 hrs away ,it all looks the same after first 10 min.Go I-80 to 95 straight shot on down 75-80 mph if your wife will let you ,legal limit 70 most of the way,

What he said...........South on 5 actually takes you past Vegas. You have to go East at Bakersfield, go through Tehachapi and pick up 15 around Barstow, then back North to Vegas.
Buy the plane tickets. Remember it's better to ask for forgiveness, after the fact, than to ask for permission. Like lenny1carl said "Have you priced Gas lately?"
The most beautiful sunrise I ever saw was over the desert, driving highway 50 through Nevada (it's called the loneliest road in America, BTW, and for good reason). But try this website. A coworker showed it to me and it looks like some pretty good rates:
The quotes include either airfare + hotel, or airfare + rental car. Also, did you think about vacationing in Reno or Tahoe? I've always found them to be more romantic and more adult oriented...
I'd drive. Flying sucks. Not the actual flying part, but the hassle at departure and arrival. Most of the time you are treated like some kind of a criminal or refugee.
Drive, and you are the boss. Take your time and enjoy it.
I didn't read last years fun, but unless you are retired??? Why waste 20 hours and wear and tear on your rig, (car or truck) Looking at cost of petrol alone would be hotel and food savings alone in vegas. I could be wrong with spare change even for a few slots. Cost of flights I had no idea. Plus if you and your wife needed to like go on a road trip outside of vegas, well the ol'trusty rental can make it so.
Well Happy Anniversary . I know she just wanted to spend quality time with you. Happy motoring, I reckon she has made her mind up, but wait the day of the trip she'll suggest maybe you all should fly
Here's a novel idea, compromise. Take a flight in to California or somewhere outside of Nevada. Then get a rental car and drive the rest of the way to Vegas. You still get a shorter trip time and you get to fly and she still gets to see some desert scenery from the road.
