This is a 99 Jeep Cherokee. Steering wheel wobbles bad at 50-60 mph. Rotated and balanced tires. Changed steering stabilizer. Had it on jacks last night and all seems tight. Even had another opinion while it was up. Nothing obvious. One guy said he's seen tire ply separation throw them off. Couldn't see the plies separating. Changing out tires seems to be a big cost for an unknown fix. Anyone else run into this on a Jeep?
First, swap the front tires for the rears and try that. If it's still the same, and your front end is all good and tight, maybe your front shock are shot.
I had this happen on my 98 cherokee I was told change the steering stabilizer by friend(mechanic). I also changed the sway bar end links because the bushings were crushed. I don't know what worked but the death wobble is no more.
My sister had the same problem on her 98. I put on new shocks and a steering stabalizer. It was alot better than before but would still occasionaly do the death wobble. She needed new brakes so replaced with new rotors at the same time. Wobble went away till the day it was wrecked a year later.
Just following up on a thread I started a few months ago. Come to find out, it was the tires. Got them changed today and it's good to go. Thanks for the replies everyone.
our 96 is doing it too starts at bout 55 clear through 65-70 wasn't that bad then it got towed becuase of forgetting to put a parking permit up and after that it get really bad.
You know I have been wanting a cherokee and talked with a lot of people that own them and always hear about front end problems even low mile ones so now I am not so sure.
if you get one get it with the 4.0 high out put, they aint liein when they say high out put that thing has some power. it aint that bad, i like it because of the power it puts out and the handeling is awsome i live on a mountain and nothin gets around them windy roads like it
I had a 92 Cherokee and the only wobble I experienced with it was because of tires. Put 100k mi on it and never had a front end problem. It may be that they are sensitive to tires that are out of round or out of balance. Other than that they are fine. I liked mine a lot, because of the size, configuration and manuverability. If I could find an older one without any rust I would buy it. The only reason I don't have it now is that my wife gave it to our son. (That was strike two.)
