i have an 06 and it does the same, the older cali trucks thew the CEL with egr disconnect, seems in 06 the all do it. just disconnect the batteries for a while to get rid of it. mine only comes on after i shut the truck off and restart, so before long road trips i unplug it and leave the truck run till i get to my destination, then i just plug in and unhook batteries to clear codes. sure is a lot of hassle though.
on edit: the time change appears to have goofed up the time stamps, this should be the 3rd post in this thread.
I am new to the forum and have been reading up on mods, problems, etc. Recently purchased an 06 PSD. I disconnected the EGR Valve and the engine light came on after 10 miles or so.
A few questions about the disconnect:
Will the computer need to be re-flashed to shut off the light?
Is there any remedy to keep it from coming back on upon disconnecting?
If you disconnected it when the engine was not running and the key was off, you shouldn't be getting a check engine light. I've been running that way for the last 2,000 miles. Disconnected -No light. Yes, a clear codes process of the Ford Diagnostics is the way to get the light to go out.
A reflash shouldn't be required. But, it appears that "PSD6.0_FX4" regards the latest flash as a 'Must Get'. My 04' has yet to be flashed with any revision. And I like the way it runs. I like my fuel economy. I like how it starts cold/hot. I'm not jumping on a band wagon any time soon.
Jacko, in previous post I have read where Cali models do throw the CEL code. If I recall too, after '04, the other 49 states do the same. PSD6.0_Fx4 recommended putting a fake plug in where the valve used to be plugged in to trick the system so it wouldn't throw codes. Where you would get a similar plug is beyond me.
Jacko, I am like U on the Flash business. My '05 runs just fine at the moment. Seems like soon as some mechanic down at the stealership fools with anything, it only gets worse. So, I will only reFlash when absolutely necessary. I just got my motorcycle back from a 10K checkup and the mechanic screwed it up with an un-necessary remapping of the computer...which I told them not to do as it was running perfect. Now it doesn't. Now I have to take it to a friend to fix it. So, I go with you on the reFlash.
If you want to bypass your operational EGR Valve you can somewhat trick the system by adding a faux EGR Valve. Leave yours in place. Unplug it. Plug in a secondary valve (secure it by nylon zip tie maybe) and no EGR Valve related CEL. The CEL remains available to alert you to other possible future issues.
I have seen here, at FTE, an EGR Valve brand new in the box is around $ 130.00 from your friendly local Ford parts dealer.
Hmmm, seems I just said this on another thread just a couple of days ago.
I am afraid of the CEL on my new 06. But I tell you what, check engine light or no, I will not run the EGR. I will source a new or used dummy valve and plug it in. Hopefully that will clear up the problem like Keith said. I guess I've been taking for granted the code clearing ability of the SCMT. How am I gonna clear codes on the 06 without a tuner?
Keep in mind that the 2006's are 50 State Certified, ie CA models for everyone!! So the 06's should turn on the CEL if the EGR is disconnected. On the 05's it was just the CA / CA type states (AZ, CT, NV, NH, NJ, OR, PA, RI) that would turn on the CEL with the EGR disconnected as they were CA based program in the ECU.
The only option in the 06's is to put a dummy one on I think.
KW...ok, got it now. For those who have not posted 2,644 times like KW, or have not ever dealt with a diesel with an EGR valve (my GMs and early VW's did not), or are dumb like me, he means...unplug from the ERG Valve, go down to Ford and spend $130 or so bucks to get a new one, plug it into the plug that would send the CEL signal that something was wrong with the EGR valve, zip tie it so it won't fall out (because the original is still in the engine, I would assume...again, I have only posted under 100 times) and then it won't throw codes. Now I got, I think.
So, based on what PSD has said, the '05 (my CA model) will not throw a code when the dummy EGR valve is plugged in, but the '06 will? Right?
