Last week I noticed a real bad rattling noise while sitting idle at a light. At first, I thought it might be a loose hanger in my exhaust system but all of the hangers seem to be fine.
The rattle is nonexistent in park, slightly bad in reverse, bad in neutral and real bad in drive. I turned off the A/C and it seems to quiet down a bit. My warranty is almost done and I want to get this fixed before it is too late. I just want to make sure the Ford dealership gets it right.
I have a pretty annoying vibration in drive and usually worse with AC on, it isnt there in nuetral/park though. Ive checked exhaust hangers, etc etc as well and cant figure it out. Sucks.
Rattles are tough to fine and fix it seems. I also have a couple of rattles one in the rear pass. door. and one in the dash somewhere. Had it fix once but its back again. Frustrating.
judging by your description, it's possible the rattle may be related to the shift linkage on the transmission. The further into gear you shift the lever, the more it rattles? If this is a mechanical linkage, which i believe it is, as opposed to a "shift by wire" setup, than you may be able to locate the problem. first the disclaimer: DO NOT GO UNDER THE TRUCK IN ANYTHING BUT PARK!! but if you follow the linkage where it connects to the tranny, usually on the driver's side just above where the tranny fluid pan is attached, you may be able to identify if something comes into contact with the linkage as it is shifted into reverse, neutral, and drive. It's worth a look.
