Hey Beartracks, I have noticed in your signature on posts, that you show your truck to have a Gear Vendors Overdrive unit. Please tell me all about it? Do you like the unit? Any problems? How about the installation? Any information would be appreciated! FOMOGO
The Gear Venders Overdrive is the best things since sex! (almost) I've been running it for almost 10 years with no problems. That includes drags strip, every day and camper and boat to the lake driving. It has an automatic shift mode so I don't have to touch it for normal driving.
M. Benz has used them in dump trucks and they are common in RV's. I bought mine from an RV shop I found in an RV magazine. It helped bring the price down. I change the oil in it every couple of years. It runs cool and has virtually no parasitic loss.
Install is fairly simple. Remove the tranny tail shaft, shorten the drive shaft and run the wiring.
Did I mention I like it?
I'm not really sure on the MPG. Didn't check it after the 4:11 gear went in. It does change the final gear ratio from 4:11 to 3:25 I believe. Present milage is about 10.6mpg in suburban driving with a new (still tight) engine.
When I put it in I couldn't justify the cost by increased milage but after 60,000 it should have paid for itself. It would have done that if it increased only 1 mpg of premium.
For acceleration purposes I launch in low range with the OD in auto position. I stick fingers in both ears and wait for it to kick in at about 5,200rpm check for loose fillings in my head and shift to 2nd. Heh, heh. :-staun
Beartracks, How large is the unit compared to your original tailshaft? Does it have a manual type shift lever or is it totally electronic? I am an F-100 nut, but i am actually considering putting one in my 65' Mustang. It has a pretty wicked 351W, c-4 with 2800 stall and so on. I currently have a 3:25 gear in the car so it will run down the highway, but my low-end sucks! I would like to be able to install a 4:11 or lower to get the best of both worlds. I have too much money in my C-4 in both performance goodies, and a polished Bell and tranny case. The tranny tunnel in the stang is limited. My home made console and leather interior would not take well to a manual shift lever. Any further information is appreciated. Thanks FOMOGO
The unit only weight maybe 50 pounds and is slightly longer/bigger around than my C6 tail shaft was. I too bought it to have the best of both worlds and it works. It doesn't gererate any heat to speak of and if it breaks it should still work in straight drive.
Gear Vendors has a web site I think.
I read an article not too long ago where they installed the GV overdrive in a 69 mach one on a c-6. it should fit on yours too. I beleive the only thing they did was shorten the drive shaft.
