Anyone ever done it? The insert in our family room is drafty and the chase cover at the top is leaking pretty badly. My wife and I decided that we never use it, so lets just pull it out and get a wall back. Framing and drywalling the opening is no big deal, but I don't know how these things are attached to the wall. I know that I need a new chase cover, and I'll leave that to the pros, but I want to save some cash and remove the insert myself.
Well if this is just a gas insert in a fireplace we normally just ran a gas line from under the house (do you have a basement or crawl space) to the insert..Put a vent pipe from the top of the insert up the fireplace flue..And put a face place on the outside to cover any gaps between the insert and the outside of the fireplace..It should be real easy to remove it..JMO..
Is this Flush mounted to the outside or is it all inside the fireplace opening??
He has the Flush mount type.. His insert was not attached except at the flue pipe.. Take off the outer decorative panels then reach in and unscrew the flue from the top of the insert..
Then get a few friends to help because it ways about 700lbs depending on your type.. Just pull on it and it should move..
