The Haynes manual says it is necessary to remove the heater core (and drain coolant of course) to get to the blower motor. Has anyone been able to remove theirs without removing the heater core?
My blower motor makes a horrible noise when it's on - I'm guessing it's bearings. I'm just hoping fixing it won't become that big of a project...
Does it have A/C? If so this can be a major undertaking. You have to get the ac crap out the way too. It is also expensive when you recharge it....if it has ac go get it done so the refridgerant doesn't make our hole in the ozone layer any bigger.
Your profile lists a '78 F100 so...if that's the blower motor you are referring to then yes, you must remove the heater plenum (the black plastic housing on the RH interior of the firewall) to get the blower motor out. This assumes you do not have factory A/C. My '79 F150's blower died around 70 or 80K miles and the replacement (15 years ago?) was only $15. Don't waste any time trying to get it out without removing the plenum-the squirrel cage keeps the motor in and it's not really too difficult a job.
To people who ask about replacing their heater core, I suggest they also replace the heater motor at the same time.
Once you do the R&R, you'll know why
i was given a tip years ago from a old mechanic,he said," before you rip your heater box out ,drill a very small hole in the end of the dimple on the blower motor housing, and us a needle grease tip and fill that hole with grease.it may stop the motors bearing from sqealing."i tryed it,and got a couple more years out of the blower motor.i had to do it a couple times, but it worked for me.try it ,you got nothin to loose, its already noisy and needs replaced,so you wont make it any worse.-billy
