Just fixed mine tonight. Took a #3 drill and drilled a hole in the top of the upper ball joint. Tapped it with a 1/4-28 tap and inserted a 45deg Zerk fitting. Pumped it full of grease - noise gone.
I've heard of this trick before, and am considering doing it to mine to prolong the ball joints life. They're still tight at 69K, and maybe fresh grease will keep them that way.....

By the way, what's the equivalent size of a #3 drill bit?

Thanks,
ROE

55k miles?!? holy crap thats like twice the normal length of time that ball joints last on the 1st gen explorers.....especially if they are high in mileage...ie over 100k.

#3 = .2130" or one size smaller than a 7/32".
