Borg Warner 1365 transfer case problem

Well, I'm having about the same problems as everyone else with this transfer case. When I let off the gas it grinds real loud. And, it makes alot of clanging noise when you shift into 4wd on the fly (manual shift) until I come to a stop, then it clunks into 4wd. I pulled it apart and, of course, found the oil pump not spinning. The metal had broken off and was pretty mangled. And the hose was broke. I was wondering, if I put it back together with new fork pads (one was gone and the other was pretty worn) and reconnect the oil pump, with a new stopper and hose, will this thing act ok. I just want it to stop grinding and act like it did when it wasn't making any noise. What causes the thing to grind and will the above fixes stop it? I'll clean it up also, but everything else seems to be in good shape. I don't know how to tell if the oil pump has gone too long w/out oil to where it won't work. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Benji

oil pump 1356

The 1356 pump uses a pin to run the pump, bad system, since changed, The pump needs changed the pump is most likely shot, and of course to change the pump the T/C needs completely disassembled, If the fork pads are badly worn or gone, this is resulted from pump failure.

I already have the t/c dissasembled. Everything looks good in there. The two pins that seal the oil pump are worn a bit, but they still are holding pressure against the pump. If I make it where it doesn't spin and hook the tube back up, will it pump oil again? I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible. Thanks for the reply.

Inside the pump

The inside of the pump wears, when the clearances get too high they will not pump, I have run and seen pump tests run that when the pump gears are undersize, they will pump zero oil, or they will only pump at certain rpms, so it might pump at 1000r's but will not pump anything above when thats what creates the most heat.

I don't know what these pumps cost but shouldn't be much.

Have you checked the carrier assembly for chipped teeth this will also cause grinding, If you have the T/C apart spin the bearings make sure you have no bad bearings feel for roughness, watch for pitting,(sometimes caused by pump failure)

One more to check

Check for wear in the ext. housing, the bushing could have a lot of wear, could be from overtorque or just general wear.

Extension housing

The extension housing surrounds the rear output shaft, the bushing is what the drive shaft yoke rides on inside the rear housing, some 1356 had rear flanges, I'm not sure of yours

You have checked the U-joints right? And eliminated the rearend and your sure its T/C.

Yeah, it's the t/c. I got under it while it was in gear and the back tires were off the ground (the truck was secured well) and had someone give it gas and let off. The loud grinding was definitely coming from the transfer case. I've done searches on here and other people have had the same problem, but no one has said what it is inside the t/c that causes it to do that. I'm pretty sure if I just fix what's wrong, it will be ok. Thanks for the replies.

Chain problems

I double checked some of the issues with this T/C and it seems they had problems with chain stretch, so It definetly could be a number of things, I wish I could drive it, I could probably tell for sure. So just tear it down and give it a good rebuild.
