I was over at a mall tonight following my wife around and ended up in a bookstore. I looked up the F150 in one of those books that purports to tell you what to buy or not to buy in vehicles. The author had nothing good to say about any of the domestic pickups. In any event, one of the complaints that he made about the Fords was that they suffer broken torsion bars that can cause a loss of control and an accident as it often happens without warning. I hadn't read or heard this anywhere else so my question is as to whether anyone has heard of this or actually suffered the breakage of the part. My thought is that the bars are not terribly expensive and since my truck is the better part of 8 years old and has 100K miles on it, I would think about changing them out if it is likely to be a problem.

Don't you just love those books? Don't let me get started on that subject. You answered your question though. Your truck's got 100K on to it, and it ain't broke yet, right? Here's what I say, "If it hasn't broken by now, it won't."
That broken spring thing was a tsb when these trucks were first built. I don't remember if it was Expeditions or 150s, or both, but some of the springs were put in backwards at the factory. They only twist one direction, and the result of them being twisted the wrong way was, they broke. As far as the spare tire cable, I don't know, mine looks good after 5 Central New York winters, the cable is coated with plastic too.
I had one break on the 98. It was exciting. Luckily I was just pulling out of my parking spot at work. Loud bang and hit the deck. My first thought was the tire exploded on the front left. At speed this could have been very serious.
Rob is right if it hasn't broke by now it probably won't.
