I read in a book that the cable that holds the spare tire on is prone to breakage. Anyone suffer the loss of their spare? We have a similar setup on our 4Runner and I have an extra cable on it to keep the wheel locked up so that it is harder to steal. However, I have often thought that if the main cable broke it might be better to have it actually drop off rather than drag as the second cable would not hold it up evenly. Any extra cables make it harder to get the spare out.
Years ago, on my wifes caravan, I went to check the air in the spare. What spare! The steel cable had rusted thru. It would be easy enough just to oil the cable when you check the air in the spare. I'm sue they would last forever that way.
We lost one on our Expy. Lucky for us it was in our driveway, when we came home it was sitting there waiting for us. I can't believe we didn't loose it on the hiway.
I think that would be rare and pretty easy to check it for rust and then coat it with a rust inhibitor to protect it. that should take care of the problem.
I didn't lose a tire, but mine refused to lower when I had a flat. I kept working with it and finally managed to completely fray the cable into a bunch of broken wires so that it wouldn't go up or down. The tire was hanging in mid air. Luckily it was still under warranty. I don't know if lubricating the cable would help or not. How often does one ever lower that thing?
lubricating would help and cause you to get it all mucked up with dirt and such a rust inhibitor gets hard and does not collect or attract dirt and protects the cable. Many winche cables come with it on already. but you are right if you keep good tires on then you would rarely use it.
Still a good idea to check the air in the spare once a year. While your at it lube the cable. My personal favorite is triflow. Used it on all the cables back in the motorcycle days. Doesn't attrack dirt (teflon) and lubricates. Can be kind of hard to find but real common in bicycle shops around here.
I must of dreamed this but I could of sworn someone replied that the cable is vinyl coated. Maybe the newer one are.
My brother in law ran into or over one that fell off with his GMC pickup. Did a fair amount of damage to the truck. Don't want to lose my wheel and don't want to cause an accident for someone else. Dropped my spare and checked things out. Looks alright so won't worry about it for now.
