Replacing Fuel Sending Unit

Im just about ready to lower my gas tank to replace my sending unit. Does anyone have any last minute advice for me, or things I should look out for, Im a bit nervous about doing it, everything looks rusty, tank seems fine but bolts and straps, etc. I got replacement tank straps, lock ring and seal, and of course new sending unit. I wanted to ask if anyone has ever cut a hole above the unit and went down from the top through the floor board. Is this doable or has anyone ever went about it this way? Any comments and advice would be appreciated.

I wouldn't cut the floor - time to replace those straps anyways and why cut up a perfectly ok floor, take the extra time and lower the tank, make sure you have most of all the gas out of it befor letting those straps go.
