LAST EDITED ON 15-Mar-01 AT 10:42 PM (EST)[p]If any of y'all live in or drive through South Carolina be careful of what kind of Chevy you blow the doors off of. Today I counted 4 cars pulled over by unmarked 2001 chevy cameros in a 60 mile strech of I-95. Just a friendly reminder that you don't always have to prove that your Ford is superior to that slow moving Chevy in front of you. It's OK that S.Carolina uses Cameros...Georgia State Patrol still uses Thunderbirds. Wonder if we could get them to race one day???
Sneaky little boogers ain't they. To tell the truth, I'm glad they're out there and I'm glad they're sneaky. Every driver they stop for speeding or tailgating or other borderline stupid stuff is another guy that might think twice before he drives wrecklessly next time he passes my wife on the freeway. Even if the next nut he stops is me, he might be saving my life.
Our Arkansas State Troopers have got a red Dodge Durango- marked only on the right side door. That one gets a lot of folks. I even saw a chevy p.u. police vehicle- full lights in the grille and all. I don't know which jurisdiction it belonged to.

Same goes for NC. The HP just got a shipment of the 2001 Camaros. They are replacing the 5.0 Mustangs for the interstates. A friend of mine, who is on the HP, said that the Camaros handle better and that is why they went to them. He is a supervisor and test drove one up to 167 mph. I don't know whether to beleive that or not. Some will be marked and some unmarked. They come with Corvette engines.
Brad, I think 167 is a far stretch, that is Winston Cup speed. I didn't even notice any of the cars on Blue Ridge Rd. where you usually see the new cars. I did see a white Suburban on I-85 in Durham with a car pulled over on three occasions, three weeks ago.

Stereo upgrade soon need some "thump" (gotta droun out those sirens somehow !!)
The cops in my town have bicycles now, I thought that was pretty funny. I really thought they were being optimistic when they equipped them with Radar but, the joke was on me. Dang if I didn't get pulled. He wouldn't have caught me if I had made the Stop light. Anyway, at first I couldn't understand what he was saying because he was all out of breath. Then when I realized he was writing me up for speeding I started laughing and he said, "OK, I'm taking you in."
It was the most humiliating thing in my life. Riding through the middle of town on those handlebars! (and he wouldn't even let me ring the bell!!!)
I ran over a bicycle cop 2 summers ago. He was riding down the sidewalk going the same direction as I, when a car pulled out of a driveway and he veered out into the road to keep from getting hit by the car and got whacked by the side of my Bronco instead.
The cop got a butt chewin' for riding on the sidewalk, the car took off never to be seen again and I got a few bucks to repaint the side of the Bronco. Luckily the worst damage to him was a few scrapes and a bruised ego, and we all know how big they are
Whatch out if your in the houston to austin area of Texas.
State troopers are driving pickups painted black with white doors, no overhead lights and none on the rear. They are using the strobes on the rear taillights and red & blues behind the grilles. The only markings I could see are the Logo's on the doors and the "EXEMPT" letering on the license plates. Most are Silverados but I even saw one Ford near houston about a month ago.
Makes it real hard to spot them since every one in Texas drives a truck!
Kansas is going to the Cameros also. I talked to a Trooper and he said the Crown Vic was a slow dog compared to a Mustang. But that the Mustang couldn't hold a candle to the top speed of the Camero. Driving a Camero and then a Mustang was no comparision according to him. Believe me, it hurt to hear him say that. The 167 sounds high but this guy said they were good for 161. At that speed a couple one way or the other wouldn't matter much. Maybe chevy is giving them all funny speedos?
Here in the K.C. area I've even seen them in vans with no markings. Lights are in the top of the windshield and inside the glass on the doors in back. Got to where you got to watch for everything!!
Am I understanding this correctly? People are willing to pull over for any car or truck with flashing lights in the grill or on the dash? Here in Michigan, if it is not clearly painted as a police car, you don't have to pull over for them. Anybody can go to WalMart and get flashing lights if they want them. If Michigan officers behaved that way they would be risk being shot at. If someone is dumb enough to pull over for an unmarked car, they shouldn't be driving. An unmarked car followed me home one night, 10 or 12 miles, lights going the whole time, boy were they mad!I had to appear in court but the judge said a driver does not have to stop for an unmarked car. How does one tell an unmarked car from any idiot with flashing lights, he asked? Case dismissed he said. :-) DF
DF, That might work up north, but if you come south to the Tarheel and you see those pretty blues and a siren behind, you best be looking for a safe place to pull over if you wish to continue. If it is at night, turn on your interior light, and your flashers, drive at below the speed limit to the nearest place that is well lighted and looks safe. Most impersonators would use a single revolving dash light. All the cop cars here, now have strobes everwhere, and have been using unmarked cars for 25 years or longer.
Chevy may be producing cars now that they claim will run 160, it just seems awfully high when most cars produced in the last few years are supposed to have limiters at about 115 mph. I don't want to be within five miles of a street car running at 150 mph or more. I have driven one at aprox 135 many years ago, and you have hardly any control at that speed.
I love my wifes husband more, now. :-)
