up here in wisconsin, milwaukee county they are driving brand new malibus, and Monte carlos. totally unmarked, lights behind the grill, and in the rear window. they are even running regular license plates, ie. no star on them like on the regular marked police cars.
Hey yall are right to be scared of Highway Patrol but those of you who drive big rigs better be even more scared them guys are burnning up US 220 and hwy 64 the other day i counted 6 trucks pulled in a four mile strech.. Also the Camros that NCHP is getting will be in force very soon.. some countys wont have them at all and some are going to have a couple of more.. my county (Randolph ) is getting two.. Im a firefighter here a little inside info... I just dread the night i have to peel one of these troopers off a tree, there really there to HELP...
I have seen the F-150 spoken of in the houston area! I almost pulled a real smooth one on one morning going home from work. The highway I take home, has a road that y's off to one side. As I was approaching the light like always, I usually downshift (because the brakes shudder the truck so bad) and let the transmission bring the truck down. (Of course the pipes racking off sounds really cool that way too!)
Anyway, I noticed a black Ford with a guy standing behind it putting something in the bed, so I figured I wouldn't give him a heart attack at 5AM! So I jsut drove normally and never downshifted. Thankfully I didn't because right as I got closer to him, he lifted the tailgate of that black truck, to reveal the reflective lettering on the back!

Now I am glad I didn't downshift it. I have also noticed they are using other cars as well! One occasion in a construction zone, Ford Contour! No visible lights, (strobes in rear tailights and backup lights), two troopers, regular license plates!
I get a lot of really strange looks in my truck, by out of state type people. The solid red lightbar mounted on the truck, and all the antennas is what boggles their mind! Don't believe me, take a look! I have my website below, also imagine this truck with a solid blue lightbar and you'll see why people from Louisiana drive slower when I was in the Texas State Guard!

Up here in Southern ontario, Canada, they are getting into the Chev Impalas a lot. Damn, with my dads '97 buick (supercharged), you could almost outrun them! They need the mustangs and Camaro's!
I got pulled over in my dad's car the other day in a 60km/h zone. I was going 112km/h (close to 70 miles an hour).
All I got was a warning!! I am a lucky SOB eh?
No prior tickets and an A license (for towing heavy trailers) got me off!
Why was I going so fast? Emergency parts run for the ol' Ford!
Hotrodford_88, Are you a chief officer in your fire department. I am also a volunteer FF (Lt.). In our county, volunteers are not allowed to run red lights, sirens, or radios in our POV unless you are a chief officer or Cpt. Chiefs and Cpt's are allowed to run radios and lights when going POV to a scene, but no siren. If you put a siren on your POV the FD is required to take insurance out on it. All other members, including myself are required to go to the station for a call and obey all traffic rules on the way to the station (yeah right!!!). Just wandering???
oldblue 18;Here in Pa.I found out the hard way that no matter whats under the hood or what ever your driving,You just cant out run that damn Radio... Redeye
I am a Lieutenant on our rescue unit, our policy is that only elected officers, and truck officers can have a full lightbar mounted on top of their vehicle. (there are only about 10 of us that do so)
Also on the insurance thing, our department doesn't have to take any insurance out on our vehicles, but I have talked to my insurance people and they could really care less. I think they see it as a community service type thing. Which is really what it's all about right? That's what we're here for after all. I think in the past year since I put my lights/siren on, I have only used the siren once. Most of the time, I just flip on the lights and go enroute to the station. Although I can go direct, I would rather go to the station and get one of the trucks.
And in Texas, the troopers really don't pay attention to it I think. I had to go take care of a blowout on my parents van about 6 months ago. The road she was on, the people drive like 70, on a two lane road. So I pulled over behind her van, and switched on my lights for saety reasons. Nobody bothered to stop and help, even though this was 15 miles outside of town on a backroad! Even a couple of state troopers in a crown vic blew by and didn't take a second glance. Even though they like having us in our county on traffic accidents for traffic control, they really don't pay any other attention. Unless someone runs them for no reason other than to run them. And we have had some do that, which resulted in the enforecement of our current policy.

A funny thing about the light bar. The troopers I talk to all agree that the fastest way to cut through traffic is using no lights at all. No turn signals, no flashing lights etc. That's why in KS a lot of the time you'll see a black dot getting real big in your rear mirror only to have it blow by you and then you see the 2 little yellow lights flashing in the rear of the Crown Vic. This same approach works very well for me on my bike or in my truck. I used to use turn signals on the interstates or flash to pass, only to get dirty looks from people. Definitely the fastest way to pass is to start your pass long before you get to them and after your past do a slow merge back in. Even at very high speed this approach seems to work and not annoy those going slower. The siren works well in town or a slow county road unless the guy in front is conducting a sound test of his 1000 watt stereo. But then anytime you move through traffic, You are the one who has to be looking all around you as well as as far down the road as you can. It is not done off hand.
That's why I am thinking of buying a headlight flashing system. Just that extra added little touch of warning power. Also I ahve a set of red & blue halogen slimline flashers that I just mounted in the grille about 2 weeks ago. Trust me, if the lights on the roof in the rear view mirror don't get your attention these will. Plus my bar was a former police dept bar, it has the Code 3 stingrays. They work like traffic sweeps, but the two inner rotators are where they are located. Flip a switch in the cab with the bar running and the two inner lights swing back to the front, sweeping back and forth at different speeds through the clear insert in the bar. Definitely an attention getter.
I am also going to add a set of the amber slimline flashers to my headache rack soon as well. These slimlines are 50 watts each, and have colored glass lenses, not the cheap plastic stuff! There is no plastic on these lights at all. I'll have to take a picture of the ones on the front of the truck tomorrow, and add it to my website.
I'm thinking about selling my truck, and buying a convertible. I'll still be able to come here I think, since I have the 65.
I've been wanting a convertible for a while, and the old left knee is starting to act up, & with this 5 speed it doesn't help.

Must be something different about the troopers in NC. We have had guys get chased and pulled over fo speeding in the station parking lot after responding to a call. We had one trooper who weaited in the parking lot until we got back from a call to give a guy a ticket for when he responded to the station. We also have real hard time with then on 10-50's. They want to try and control the scene, but until we get the victims out of the car and on the way to hospital or the fire out it is our scene, but they don't seem to understand that. Some are better than others.

We have had some guys in other depts around here, get nailed for running excessive speeds to calls. Try 110 down the feeder of interstate 10. Needless to say, he didn't get a slap on the wrists from the judge either! I don't know how long it took that guy to get his license back......

We had our Fire Chief pulled over by a cop in our town GOING to a working structure fire... and the chief was only going 10-15 over the speed limit! Yet... a few months before that we watched a cop in our town FLY past our firehouse doing 100+ on his way to a medical call (a cut finger I think.. nothing at all serious) right through an active (25mph flashing sign) school zone with no lights or sirens going. I think every town has a few of these jerk cops in their town.
When I was in High School, I was going home and had a couple of friends in the car with me after a fottball game (band people were there longer than the football team was!) Anyway, we were siting at a red light, with no one else around and up pulls one of the local boys. Next thing I know he flips his lights on, siren as well. And just blows the light, when he got to the other side of the intersection he shut his lights and siren off and just kept going..... Hmmm, I think that was an abuse of his authority....
Also, had a police officer from the same town pull me over one night as I was going home from a car club meeting. 9:00 at night, he pulls me over and asks me if I was racing that black 66 mustang that was next to me. I told him I wasn't (which I wasn't) and that I don't because I don't have the money to replace an engine.... Get this, he pulls me over gets out of the patrol car in a three piece suit! Talk about the nerve of some people, he wasn't even on duty! Then he gives me a ration of stuff about the address on my license. I told him I was going home, and he asked me where. I told him Dayton, and he said "well your license says you live at xxxx street. Then I attempted to explain to him that we were in the process of selling one house, and buying another one. And if the deal on the house we were buying fell through then we would have to move back to the other place. (sounds simple enough right?) He never could figure out what I was talking about, when I told him it would be a waste of my time to go get 2 new licenses if that happened, and a waste of the States time to send me those 2 licenses. I guess he wasn't a very good listener, and so he just gave me a warning to pay more attention to my speedometer!

Sheriff's Departments in NE Ohio are now using special "Police Package" Dodge Ram 4x4 extended cabs. What's worse, they're getting them (fully equipped and out the door mind you) for just over $18k. My question is: If the auto manufacturers can afford to sell the trucks for this price to law enforcement, why does it cost us nearly $30k for the same thing minus the lights and spiffy door stickers?
