Anyone had a problem with their 5 speeds not starting (or even turning over) when the clutch is pressed? My 98 is doing it intermitantly, so it is hard to pinpoint the problem. The only way to get it started is to push it about 50 feet, then it turns over starts on the first hit.
I did a search and found the CPP (clutch pedal positioner - basically a neutral safety switch) could be the culprit. Replaced that, but am still having the problem. Anyone have any other ideas? I am riding around with one of the dealerships recording units right now to see if I can get it to do it again and record it on the machine, but of course it hasn't done it since putting the recorder on...
Ranger has around 90,000 on it and the clutch fluid is fine.
With it not turning over, I thought it was the CPP, but since that is new now and still doing it, I didn't know if there were anymore sensors tied to the tranny, flywheel, etc., that could be going out.
Pressure is fine and shifts normally once started. I am not having any issues as far as 'driveability' goes - it is just something in the clutch/tranny/starter relay that is going/gone bad. The truck drives great and runs mechanically fine - once it starts.
Is the starter relay built into the starters they use on the 4.0's or is it a fenderwell mount?
Not sure on relay location. But I gotta run to Autozone to get a new tailgate light cover (I don't even want to know where mine went), so I'll ask the guy when I get there.
How many miles on the starter if you have any idea?
Starter is the same as the truck - somewhere around 90,000. I changed instrument clusters because it came with one with no tach. I bought one off ebay with the tach, and just haven't calibrated it yet to match the old miles.
I dont have a wiring diagram for yours, but it's probably wired like this: one positive cable from the battery goes
to the starter & the other one goes to the starter relay.
Totally forgot to ask the Autozone people. Smooth right? Sorry about that.
I know my starter isn't original, my truck has a lil over 135K on it. It may just be time for a new starter, but don't throw parts at it. Let's find this relay first.
