I am pulling a 302 out of my truck. Do I have to pull the tranny too
and if not how do I get to those top bolts that connect to the engine. Thanks,

No, you don't have to pull tranny. In fact, that would be downright hard.

Disconnect the tranny from the engine by removing the bolts around the bell housing to the engine. Yeah, the two up on top are tough to get to, but not impossible. I have done it twice and used a universal ratchet joint with an extension...that worked ok. You will need to loosen the bolts for the tranny mount as well in order to work the engine forward and up.

Are you gonna re-build??

Sometimes you need about 18"-24" of extension with U-Joint attachment to reach those two bolts.
Having a thin person on the ratchet helps too.

Great! The cost of the universal rachet would be well worth it. Will pick one up tomorrow. Thanks for the tip on the transmission bracket as well. Already have a rebuilt 302 to put in. Will probably tear this one down to learn a little bit, thanks,

If you take the fan, shroud and other front mounted apparatus that has to be changed out any way, you can easily reach them in the engine bay. They will change from the hardest to the easiest. Good luck

You didnt say what kind of tranny you have,

If it's auto you need to unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate if you dont you will have trans fluid all over the floor,

and might ruin the pump seal also,

Ben
