Haunted Houses

Hi all!

Anyone here go to, or work at haunted houses? Not real ones, the kind that are for entertainment. Do you like going to them? Do you like working at them?

I've been helping my friend set up the Jaycees haunted house for years, but never really worked as a monster scaring people. Last year, they were short handed one night so I (reluctantly) decided to help out. I thought it would really suck, and that people would laugh at my feeble atempt to scare them. I was wrong. The first group was 5 adult guys. They start in my room and are read the rules of the house (laughing and commenting on how lame it is the whole time). Immediately following the last word of the rules, the sign on which they're printed lifts up and I lurch out in a skull mask and huge scary golves, screaming my head off. I laughed my **** off when every one of them hit the ceiling and wound up in a pile on the floor. The night just got better as it went on.

This year, I built my own "rules room" at the house and have 1-3 other people working it with me, including my 12 y.o. son. After 7 nights and over a thousand customers, I never had a group go through that didn't jump when we scared them. We've had at least a half dozen girls wet their pants (and these are high school girls, not toddlers), almost 2 dozen people too scared to go any further and demand that the guide "let them out", and tons of people jump back so hard they knocked the 'in' door open and fell back into the waiting area.

It sounds mean to scare people like that, but like I told my son, they came here and paid us money to scare them. We're just giving them what they wanted.

If you've never worked a haunted house before, I'd reccomend it. It's a total blast! If you have, please share some stories.

Kevin K.
