Hood Switch?

Hood Switch?
I have a 02 Explorer XLT and a simple question, I hope. What does the switch do that activates when you open and close the hood? The switch is located on the left side of the engine compartment, right above the passenger side front wheel.

If it is the same one I am thinking about that is on the 95-01's, it is a sensor for the OEM alarm that tells if the hood if closed or not when the door locks are set and the alarm sets.

My 02 doesn't have a hood light, or at least i never have seen it. I bought the truck used. Where is the light located?
I'll try to set the alarm with the hood open and see what happens.
