So.... anyone know what years interchange on these clusters? If a guy were standing in a junkyard, what should he look for? I have an '83 F150 / I6. Can't say that I really need a tach but if the opportunity came up... it'd be a cool added touch!
I finally got around to installing my gauge cluster with tach. (The previous cluster had guages and no idiot lights) And the tach doesn't work. Everything else seems to work perfectly aside from this?
What could it be? I've got an I6 under the hood..wiring going to the cluster looked good, what else could i have done for it not to work?
I've seen some problems with dirty contacts on the instrument panel connector (clean with alcohol or better yet, a good contact cleaner) and make sure plug is seated properly in the instrument cluster printed wiring connector. First, make sure the fuse (#18 Warning Lamps, 15 A.) is not blown and you have +12 V on tach terminal "B". The tach itself could be bad. You could eliminate the wiring harness as a problem by temporarily wiring up the tach using the scheme in my previous post. This could easily be done underhood since all that's needed is +12 V, Ground and tach terminal (-) on coil. Note: Color coded hook-up leads with alligator clips each end are available at Radio Shack for a few bucks. You could disconnect the battery and read the resistance of the wiring with an ohmmeter. Tach terminal "G" (and "8", if Eight cyl.) should read 1 Ohm or less to chassis ground. Tach terminal "C" should read 1 Ohm or less to the coil negative and tach terminal "B" should read 1 ohm or less to the + Battery cable terminal with ignition switch in "Run".
