Any suggestions

Next weekend I am going to be towing our travel trailer. This is the first big load I have towed with the truck. We took it down with my sisters 1999 Silverado 1500 so I am fairley certain the truck will be fine. The trailer is a 2002 Salem 29rlss with a huge slide out. Trailer weights 6950 empty. Truck is rated to tow 7100. I am right at the max, and maybe over since the trailer has our stuff in it.

Any tips?

Truck is a 2002 F-250
5.4L 4R100 ESOF
Ext cab, short bed.

Going about 50 miles

The truck should tow it fine. Just take it easy until you get a feel for how it tows. Also, I don't like to break any speed records when I tow. I don't tow trailers very often anymore, but do tow a 5th wheel. They are a little easier to tow because they generally track easier and are less effect by cross wind etc.

Yeah I work at an RV dealer so I tow all the time.. It is just I am used to driving Chevy's and well to be honest our chevy trucks seem to have more ***** than the F-250 does. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to break it.. lol

I too tow a 5th wheel, 30' Prowler. You probably won't break the truck, but it will be hard on the transmission and brakes. Be extreamly careful. Stopping will be a chore on an overloaded truck. Hope you have a trans cooler!

50 miles isn't far, just hope that someone doesn't stop in front of you. Keep a very safe following distance!

Good Luck.

I have a prodigy brake controller and the trailer has electric brakes so that shouldnt be a problem. I am worried about getting it moving.. Not so much stopping..

Jspafford, the F250 is a very heavy duty truck. With that in mind, the truck will handle the weight no problem, however; the 5.4 motor has a bad enough time moving that heavy truck as it is, let alone with a trailer on the back. The motor will do it, just won't do it very quick. Hook up a V10 or a PSD and it is a different story. Good luck and drive safe!!

Well I figured driving with the trailer will be like 0-60 in about 15 minutes.. No, but seriously.. Has anyone with the 5.4L towed anything that weights 7K? I would like to see if anyone can tell me just HOW slow it is. I tow a flat trailer with 2 ATV on it that weights about 2500# but that is nothing compared to what the RV weights. I can just start to tell there is a load when towing the 2500# Takes off perty good but shifts out of OD when the breeze blows.. lol

Wink

your f250 would have more "*****" if it had a "real" motor

Your 5.4 will get the job done. It won't be a hotrod, but will be OK. I've pulled heavy loads in the past with a lot less motor in old pickups. You just don't break any speed records.

Take a look at my gallery -
It is, however, an '05, with a little more HP than the earlier 250s. The Wilderness weighs just over 7k loaded, and tows just fine. Keeps up with traffic ok, passes some semis, and will top a pretty good hill accelerating if you really put the hammer down. I normally let the speed fall off a little on the steeper hills, but that's just me, I figure it saves some wear and tear. Don't even kick in the Tow Mode most of the time.

Well from what I hear the difference between the 2 Valve and 3 valve motor is like night and day, but I do appreciate your input. I think it will be OK, but I like a little reassurance.

Ok, enough of the 5.4 bashing.... It isn't the best motor for the F250 but it works.

I just towed a camper from Anchorage to Oklahoma City with my 5.4 F250 in July. I was 200lb from gross weight. The only problems I had were in the mountains. The worst was 45mph up hill, but the speed limit was 55 and I wasnt the slowest one by any means.
From northern Canada to OKC I had no problem doing the speed limit (70-75mph).
So yes you will be fine pulling the camper.
We I also pull the same camper with an 03 Yukon XL, and the GMC is faster off the line with the camper them the f250, but the f250 get's it in the 40 mph and up due to the computer programing that chevy uses in the trucks to save drive lines.
