I am restoring my 78 F100 and have taken the cab and body off the frame to have the frame cleaned up and painted. My question is was there a piece of felt type material behind the backing plates on the front axels. My friend took the front end completly apart and said the only thing he cant find was those pieces of material. What was this for? Not shown in the book that I have that gives you a blown up view of the assemly. Does any one know where I can get this or the material it is made from?
Yes, I have seen this on two wheel drives, I don't know where one could this material, but something similar to the canvas looking material might work if you decide to go with some sort of material.
I think you're right, some type of gasket or paper material. That what I was thinking also, an anti vibration for the dust shield, maybe to minimize noise travel and noise resonation to the dust shield, not sure what the engineers where thinking when they put those.
Well for the time being I'm going to go with that idea until I here something different. I stiil have the brake lines and rear brakes and other parts to put back on before I need to do that. I have a bear black frame with front and back axels under it.
I dont know if they were felt or paper and the guy that took it apart said he took it apart so he could do a better job at painting it. He said he new there was a gasket of some type but couldn't remember but he new there was a gasket there and couldnt find it when I went to pick it up. Do you know?
